Job description


The role of the Health Care Assistant is to assist the qualified nurse to:
• Provide direct care and support to the patient as delegated by the qualified nurse.
• Maintain a clean safe environment for patients and relatives.
• Assist with clerical and housekeeping duties.
• Contribute to maintaining the unit’s philosophy of care.
• To be able to work in a learning environment, providing a high standard of nursing care and support to patients.
• To work flexibly according to the needs of the department including evenings, weekends and BH, and to support OP services and clinical areas across site where required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time (37.5hrs) HCA3. St Helier Adult Outpatients department

Applicants must have previous HCA experience, preferably within outpatients and have extended skills to include ECG and phlebotomy and flow rate. You must be willing to further develop your skills, with the potential opportunity to undertake the training nursing associate (TNA) training programme at a future date, as part of our strategic L&D plan.

Applicants will be required to work evenings and weekends as required to support the service, and to be able to work across site as necessary. There may also be a requirement to work in other wards and departments in exceptional circumstances.

Willingness to expand clinical knowledge and skills and to work in a variety of clinics is required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, and the ability to work under pressure.

Applicants must be motivated, flexible, able to work as part of a team, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Applicants will need to be able to work flexibly around the needs of the service, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays. There may also be a requirement to support the wards in exceptional circumstances if required.

St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).

With nearly 900,000 people coming to our hospitals for care and treatment every year, our almost 5,000 staff and 500 volunteers work around the clock to keep our busy hospitals running smoothly.

As teaching hospitals, we play a key role in the education and training of tomorrow's doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Both sites work in partnership with St George’s Hospital and St George’s Medical School in south London to deliver high quality education and research.
