Jon Title: Senior Network Engineer
Location: Liverpool (5 days on site)
Salary: £45,000 - £55,000 BOE
Contract type: Permanent
About the role:
As a Network Engineer, you will provide full network support, configuration, implementation, design, and management across the organisation. You will answer escalated technical queries and problems and will bring network best practice to the team, you will also provide excellent network technical and project delivery support delivering network project deliverables on time as well as day to day support and supporting customer faults ensuring services meet or exceed their SLAs and efficiency targets. Design work will also be a requirement.
Supporting and providing an out of hours on-call service to our customers is also expected and travel to and from customer site may be required.
What you'll be doing:
- Establishing the networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation, defining, documenting, and enforcing system standards.
- The design and implementation of new solutions and improving resilience of the current environment.
- Maximizing network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades, and collaborating with network architects on network optimisation.
- Undertaking data network fault investigations in local and wide area environments, using information from multiple sources.
- Securing network systems by establishing and enforcing policies and defining and monitoring access.
- The support and administration of firewall environments in line with IT security policy.
- Updating job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organisations.
- Reporting network operational status by gathering and prioritising information and managing projects.
- Upgrading data network equipment to the latest stable firmware releases.
- Configuration of routing and switching equipment.
- Configuration of hosted IP voice services.
- Basic configuration of firewalls.
- Remote support of on-site engineers and end users/customers during installation.
- Remote troubleshooting and fault finding if issues occur upon initial installation.
- Capacity management and audit of IP addressing and hosted devices within data centres.
- Liaising with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk engineers on a regular basis.
- Speaking with customers via email and phone for initial requirement capture.
- Provide pro-active monitoring and management of services to all customers
- Use the internet and other sources of information to remain up t date with the technical issues affecting the technology sector
- Liaise with clients to analyse, review, identify and develop relationships that meet/exceed customer needs.
- Resolution of full range of technical support issues, demonstrating developed problem-solving skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize workloads
- Delivery of assigned tasks within specified timelines, to an agreed quality standard
- To carry out any other task associated with the role as reasonably requested
- Ensure that the Team Leader / Manager is informed of workload status and details of key issues
Requirements
What are we looking for?
Essential:
Significant (3-5 years) experience of:
- Layer 2 - Cisco/Dell/Huawei switches (CLI, VLANs)
- Layer 3 – Cisco/Huawei routing (OSPF, BGP)
- Security – Cisco/SonicWALL/Fortinet firewall configuration
- Awareness of some of the following vendor products; Cisco, Extreme, Fortinet, SonicWALL
- VMware – network configuration
- OS - Windows Server, Linux, network configuration, troubleshooting
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage in a pressured environment
- CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) (or equivalent) is required.Strong knowledge of connectivity technologies (LAN/WAN/Wireless)
- Experience in configuring and troubleshooting networking protocols e.g., TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, DNS VoIP, VPN’s
- Experience in managing and supporting day to day business / customer needs
- Ability to work as part of a team with strong work ethic
- Willingness to learn new technologies using self-learning and dedicated training techniques.
- Logical approach to fault finding and commitment to see the job through via working in ticketing system.
- Take part in an on-call rota and provide support for our customers
- Take part in a shift rota in the SOC between 8am – 6pm.
Desirable:
- Willing to work infrequent weekends, bank holidays or Out of Hours to support customer requirements (TOIL of overtime payable in line with company policy)
- Ability to mentor and act as a role model to others
