Power Electronics Engineer

ZeroAvia

Location

Kemble, Gloucestershire | United Kingdom

Job description

At ZeroAvia, we’re clean sky thinkers. For the world to achieve truly clean, guilt-free flight, we need a scalable solution; hydrogen-electric powertrains. As a leader in zero-emission aviation and a UK Jet Zero Council member, we’re designing and commercialising hydrogen-powered solutions that will positively impact the future of aviation, global connectivity, and the world.

Engineering designs our next-generation hydrogen electric engines. Working across Hydrogen, Propulsion and Integration divisions, they solve technical problems and help decarbonize aviation by finding solutions for electric propulsion, hydrogen storage, fuel cell technology, power distribution, thermal management and more.

As a Power Electronics Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the technical ownership of System integration, testing and validation of EPS(electric propulsion system) against aerospace standards. which involves Assembling Sic Inverter with Motor and performing validation testing on Dyno.

You will be responsible for defining the test specifications at system level according to aerospace standards, doing gap analysis and validate the system against the specifications within specified timescales. This role requires the setup of test benches to perform testing and requires collaboration with various engineering disciplines such as motor and mechanical design teams and communicating test results to them and suggesting any modifications if required. The successful candidate will lead testing, debugging and process development activities, ensuring compliance with aerospace standards and safety regulations.

Requirements

Power Electronics Key Responsibilities:

- Take technical ownership of Electrical propulsion system which involves Motor, Inverter and Control Electronics power electronic circuits through development and validation phases.

- Deliver testing and validation activities to meet timescales and comply with aerospace standards and customer requirements.

- Interface with suppliers and partners, providing technical requirements and feedback for existing and new designs.

- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to conduct debugging and validation for complete EPS system.

- Lead test and validation activities.

- Lead process development activities.

- Support the planning of power electronics-related activities.

- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, quality requirements, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

- Assist in achieving and maintaining compliance certifications, working within relevant guidelines.

Power Electronics Requirements:

- Degree qualified in an Engineering or Science-related discipline.

- Minimum 5 years, preferably 10 years, of extensive experience in power electronics design and testing.

- Experience in motor drive design, including inverters, DC-DC converters, and high-speed motors.

- Familiarity with reliability, risk, or safety analysis tools (FTA, DFMEA).

- Qualification of systems to aerospace standards (e.g., DO160), including EMC and environmental testing.

- Understanding of Electrical safety to make sure all testing is done following safety guidelines.

- Appreciation of rotating machine design and motor principles.

- Ability to write technical documentation (e.g., test and validation reports).

- Experience with analog sensors such as high voltage, and current sensing and resolvers.

- Familiarity with power systems to meet creepage and clearances for operation up to 1kV.

Diversity and Inclusion

As a young company shaping the aviation industry, we know that diversity fuels success and unlocks potential. We embrace being an equal-opportunity employer and actively seek individuals from diverse backgrounds. We value the multitude of skills, perspectives, and mindsets everyone can bring to the table.
