Job description
We are looking for a new Head of Department that will lead an experienced team of 5 members of staff. They will oversee the administration and teaching of both English and Media Studies throughout Key Stages 3-5. We are not prescriptive, and teachers are free to make their own choices from the list of selected texts. You will join a committed, hardworking, and friendly department who work closely together to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students. The department has a wealth of experience and there is a strong programme of support in place for applicants who may be new to A Level teaching.
Experience of teaching English Language and Literature at GCSE is essential and experience of English Literature at A Level and Media Studies at GCSE is desirable. It would be desirable for the successful candidate to be able to teach a second subject.
Class sizes at Key Stage 3 and 4 are limited to 20 students, and due to English Literature being an optional subject for GCSE, the class sizes are usually smaller and composed of dedicated, enthusiastic students who have chosen to continue their study of the subject. Many of these students go on to continue their study at A Level, and so English Literature is a popular subject with classes of between 8-10 students being quite common. Our KS3 team is committed to promoting high standards of language and literacy in our bespoke Key Stage Three curriculum.
We are dedicated to equipping students with a strong command of spoken and written language while fostering a love for literature through extensive reading. Our KS3 students have access to a plethora of literary competitions and opportunities to express their creativity. In Year’s 10 and 11, our students study the iGCSE Pearson Edexcel English Language A and English Literature specifications. We follow examination only paths. Students sit two examinations at the end of each iGCSE course with a mixture of closed and open book assessments for Literature, and with an Anthology of non-fiction, and poetry / prose extracts for Language. We follow the OCR examination board for GCSE Media Studies with students following the curriculum that focuses on the two examination papers of Television and Promoting Media, and Music and News.
Students also complete an NEA on Creating Media at the end of Year 10 and beginning of Year 11. English Literature is a popular choice at A Level, and we follow the Edexcel examination board.
This post is full-time, but part time (days negotiable) would be considered for suitably qualified candidates. Applications are equally welcome from experienced or early careers teachers.
