Job description
I am a totally dependent paralysed man employing up to 4 live in carers, who enable me to live as normal a life as possible in the community. In the past I have employed GAP year students from EU wishing to gain healthcare experience prior to moving on to study for their chosen profession. I am now employ a combination of professional carers and/or students. My carers have a contract and are paid by the hour, normally, but not always, for 24-hour shifts. They work for varying periods, but we aim for a week on their week off, nevertheless flexibility is essential to fit in with the needs of the disabled person and all the members of the care team.
Each carer has their own bedroom, but if travelling with their employer carers need to be prepared to share a room. We are very lucky in that we live in a nice house in a nice area within a historic town with many amenities including a train station.
Job description
Two carers normally work in teams of 2 and are on call 24 hours a day when on duty. No experience is necessary, just a willingness look after a totally dependent paralysed man in a kind, patient and flexible manner. Full training is provided by previous carers and with online training as necessary. As well as providing personal care (e.g. washing, dressing, carrying out physio, etc), my carers prepare meals, assist me with office administration and ensure the house is clean. I need my carers to perform chest physio and manual evacuation of my bowels. If necessary, my carers must be prepared to work on their own, if for example another carer is ill or on leave.
Essential Candidate Requirements: speak English well, ideally full clean driving licence, patience, kindness, flexibility, ambition, communications, interpersonal skills, cleanliness and willing to learn necessary nursing procedures.
