Practice Manager
We have an exciting opportunity for a Practice Manager to join our growing team at Harper James.
You will be a vital part of the firm’s senior leadership team with a broad range of responsibilities for our people, business processes and internal operations. Initially reporting directly to the CEO and working collaboratively with other team members you will have the opportunity to significantly impact the firm's future success and continued growth.
The role is full time and office based at our office in central Birmingham.

We aspire to disrupt the model for which legal services are provided to businesses. The firm’s innovative approach to delivering highly tailored and accessible legal advice is considered genuinely different to the establishment.
Harper James was founded in 2014 and continues to grow at c40%+ year on year. This financial year, more than 120 people will support more than 2,500 businesses and our turnover will exceed £13m. We expect to double in size over the next 3 years.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Developing and executing operational strategies to optimise efficiency and support the firm's growth.
- Overall responsibility for coordinating and administering bulk renewals of practising certificates, professional indemnity insurance, and all other insurances.
- Overseeing supplier management for various services, including facilities, office supplies, call handling, online legal resources, events, subscriptions, and some software.
- Serving as the central point of contact for matters related to our offices.
- Overseeing onboarding, performance management, and employee relations, including leading on induction days and through exit processes.
- Managing employee benefits and provide ongoing advice on how they can be improved whilst also ensuring we get the best value.
- Overseeing with the finance team the administration of timely and accurate processing of payroll.
- Conducting employer engagement surveys and other initiatives to gauge and enhance employee satisfaction.
- Overall responsibility for our use of our HR system, Staff Circle, including introducing new and increasing adoption of all its features.
What we are looking for
- Proven experience in a senior leadership role with accountability for business management, operations and HR, ideally within the legal industry but at the least within professional services.
- Strong understanding of operational excellence, employment law and HR best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to align people and operational strategies with business goals.
- Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performance teams.
