Job Description

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Director of Programme - Fusion Fuel Capability, you'll play a pivotal role in establishing a unique tokamak-centred fusion fuel capability for the UK, with global applications. Be a key player in our journey towards international prominence.

The UK is pioneering a world-first tritium breeder blanket experimental platform, encompassing neutronics, materials engineering, diagnostics, and digital twinning. We aim to prove the predictability of tokamak blanket performance.

With the opportunity to build and lead a team of around 100 experts, and contribute to cutting-edge research, this is a career-defining opportunity.

What will you be responsible for?

- Lead a £200m project to develop an experimental neutron-source-based breeder test bed and twin within 5 years.
- Collaborate with the UKAEA Executive and all Divisions to ensure a consistent understanding of the Programme strategy and delivery plan.
- Define the scope of supply for academic and industrial partners, in coordination with the Director of Supply Chain and Commercial.
- Support the Heads of Commercial and Procurement in partner selection and contract evaluations.
- Play a key role in the Fusion Fuel Programme Executive, contributing to and taking collective responsibility for the Program's direction and delivery.
- Manage a team of 4 workstream leaders and support staff development across within the programme across UKAEA.
- This role involves regular international travel and working in a tritium environment.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- Higher degree in a science or engineering discipline;
- Chartered Scientist or Engineer (or international equivalent);
- Leadership of very complex research technology programmes through multiple parts of the lifecycle, which must include concept stage and digital elements;
- Internationally recognised research expertise in the field of fusion (neutrons / materials / radionuclides / fusion engineering /diagnostics).
