ESG Manager, Zertus UK & Ireland
Hybrid working with travel
Monday - Friday 08:30 - 16:30 (37.5 hours per week)

As an ESG Manager at Zertus, you will lead the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability agenda for the Zertus UK&I Market Unit, with responsibility for the overall creation, development, and implementation of an effective strategy. The role will work closely with the European ESG / People Manager, regularly sharing best practice and collaborating in the annual ESG report, carbon accounting, and any legislation and strategy implementation that requires collaboration. The role also works with internal and external stakeholders to establish and achieve ESG and Sustainability goals through a clear coherent framework that results in a positive workplace culture, community involvement, economic and environmental position.
- Responsible for establishing and promoting the ESG strategy within the Zertus UK&I Group, working with lead stakeholders in contributing areas such as HR and Procurement to develop the overall strategy.
- In collaboration with the European ESG Manager, establish clear goals for ESG & Sustainability across the Zertus Group and publish an annual review of performance against these goals.
- Provide expert advice and direction on all sustainability matters.
- Effective communication and engagement, working with colleagues at all levels to foster participation and collaboration in change initiatives and campaigns.
- Work closely with all parties including external contractors to deliver carbon reduction and wider sustainability strategies and objectives of the business.
- Working collaboratively with each business function to ensure that appropriate ESG & sustainability goals and governance are an integral part of the continuous improvement plans.
- Proactively work with stakeholders to identify future sustainability challenges and establish relevant mitigation strategies.
- Ensuring compliance of legislative requirements for UK&I ESG and sustainability criteria.
- Work with procurement to build climate risk resilience in our supply chains through engaging with industry bodies to monitor risk and conducting a supply chain risk assessment to identify key commodities and countries of origin.
- Drive retailer value creation and deepen partnerships through communication of ESG achievements and pilot projects.
- Support the HR Director with all ESG matters across the full business.
Key Deliverables
- Deliver annual ESG Reporting in collaboration with the European ESG Manager
- Jointly lead the ESG steering committee and deliver biannual updates to the Zertus Management Board.
- Ensure short and long term KPIs are being met and hold the relevant departments accountable for their success.
- Deliver compliance for all legislative measures linked to ESG; CSRD, Taxonomy, Deforestation, Supply Chain Due Diligence, SECR, CCA.
- Deliver compliance to all sustainability certification such as RFA, RSPO, Fair Trade etc.
- Determine and champion relevant certification undertaken by the Market Unit e.g. 14001, Origin Green (ROI)
- Incorporate Customer and Industry standards and requirements into the Zertus Group ESG Strategy.
- Help develop and drive a culture of engagement on sustainability through active participation with the site management and project teams on initiatives to reduce our environmental impact.
- Coordinate collation of all relevant environmental and sustainability related data to ensure a consistent approach across the Market unit.
- Support the HR team in their work on people engagement, welfare and human rights.
Support the Brand Marketing team to develop and shape the sustainability credentials of the Market Unit and our Brands.
Relevant experience with a clear track record of achievement within a fast-moving food manufacturing goods environment.
The candidate will require exceptional leadership qualities, extensive experience of delivering effective change management, a proven record in developing and defining strategy, policies and excellent relationship management skills and strong functional acumen. They will be passionate about improvement and influencing change, who will facilitate and support collaborative working.
Requirements:
- FMCG food experience is a priority.
- Experience of working with Environmental Management Systems
- Structured and methodical thinking.
- Excellent teamwork and ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation is essential.
- Strong system skills including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability & willingness to travel when necessary.
- Ability to plan and organise own workload.
- Maintain excellent working relations with key departments and managers to ensure communication is well delivered throughout.
- Must be pro-active and able to multi-task within a busy working environment.
- Have excellent attention to detail.
- Good commercial awareness.
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, self-motivation, and enthusiasm are essential, as is the ability to meet deadlines.
Ideal background:
Environmental Diploma / Sustainability related Degree.
