Job description
Overall Purpose:
Middlesex University is an ISO 14001 registered organization working towards a Net Zero
carbon target and recently signed the UN SDG Accord.
This job coordinates the administration, activities, and data within the University
Environment Team with a focus on the Environment and Energy Management Systems
and the University’s involvement with the UN SDG Accord.
The focus of the role is to assist in driving forward the Carbon Management Plan and
performance within the UN SDG Accord through the development of timely and robust data
management systems for internal and external reporting.
The successful candidate will have strong data management, analytical and organizational
skills as well as interest and knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues with an
appetite for problem solving and solutions.
This role and is expected to evolve over time offering the incumbent the opportunity to
develop professionally. The University has an interest in the potential to develop integrated
management systems within the University.
Principal Duties:
• Develop and Maintain the University UN SDG Accord reporting matrix to ensure it’s
up to date to ensure the University remains legislatively compliant with accredited
schemes such as ISO 14001 and prepare reports for the University Environmental
Steering Group on progress against the SDG’s
• Work with University business partners to gather data, information and case studies
throughout the reporting year to support the UN SDG Annual Reporting process and
lead on drafting the SDG Annual Report
• Engage and influence key internal stakeholders at different levels to ensure
environmental sustainability objectives are embedded across the University’s
operations to drive long term behavior and operational changes
• Develop and update environmental policies and procedures in line with industry
best practices and regulatory requirements
• Identify opportunities for resource conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable
practices
• Lead and coordinate events to promote engagement in sustainability and the
development of related initiatives, whilst working to develop a comms strategy
• Collaborate on and enhance the audit program to ensure proactive regulatory
compliance, strategically preparing for upcoming external audits
• Strategically plan and oversee the day to day operation of the University
Environmental Management System including the objectives and targets, aspects
register, legal register and audit program ensuring seamless readiness for external
audits
• Analyze and rigorously validate critical environmental data encompassing utilities,
waste and refrigerant metrics along with associated carbon dioxide emissions for
both internal and external reporting purposes. Continuously monitor and interpret
performance trends over time to drive decision making
• Work in partnership with our Energy Broker to track energy use / cost, obtain meter
reads, validate automated metering outputs and follow up out of parameter results /
bills that have failed validation
• Work in partnership with our Energy Bureau provider to track energy use against
target, identifying anomalies to the Head of Environmental Sustainability raising
and taking ownership of jobs/investigation requests from the wider Facilities
Management team for anomalies
• Liaise with third parties to ensure Display Energy Certificates (DEC’s) and other
statutory environmental documentation (such as Duty of Care, refrigerant registers)
are up to date and any issues are flagged with the Head of Environmental
Sustainability
• Liaise with our Energy Broker and Providers to ensure that all re-charges and invoices
for income from solar and other third-party income is carried out in a timely manner in
conjunction with our Financial Services Team
Health & Safety:
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety related legislation on all work-related
matters
General Duties:
• Other reasonable duties as may be required by the line manager, Director of
Estates and Facilities Management Services
