Job description

PURPOSE OF JOB: To provide an efficient service to all patients and Doctors ensuring that the work allocated to you is regularly prioritised and dealt within deadlines set. Confidentiality and adherence to the Data Protection Act should be maintained at all times. You will be a member of a Primary Health Care team carrying under clinical supervision of the Practice Nurses, following evidence-based national and local clinical governance principals. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Carry out venepuncture. • Ensure all samples are correctly labelled and prepared for collection. • Take and record blood pressures using templates as requested by doctors or practice nurses. • To undertake giving of Vitamin B12 injections • Removal of sutures – under guidance where necessary. • Perform ECGs as required. • To undertake dressing of wounds with support of the practice Nurses. • To give annual flu vaccinations and assist in the running of flu clinics. • To carry out Dopples studies. • Assisting GP within Minor Ops. • Carry out data entry of patient contact onto surgery clinical system. To keep accurate and contemporaneous and relevant records. • Order supplies of needles, containers and other supplies to meet anticipated need. • Maintain a high standard of personal standards in the area of infection control. • To follow directives as supplied by the surgery both clinically and with regards to, health and safety related issues such as needle stick injuries. • To undertake annual investigation for diabetic patients prior to their annual reviews. • To acknowledge clinical limitations and not undertake any procedures for which training has not been undertaken. • To maintain and update knowledge of development in all relevant areas of role. To be responsible for own professional practice and accountable according to UKCC guideline • To provide support to the practice nursing team to enable them to function properly. • To ensure Clinical Rooms have adequate stock of disposable clinical items. • Any other ad hoc duties. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data. Health & Safety The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others’ health, safety and security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy, to include: • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards • Reporting potential risks identified. Quality The post-holder will strive to maintain quality within the practice, and will: • Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk • Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions, either directly or under supervision • Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the team’s performance • Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients needs • Effectively manage own time, workload and resources. Communication The post-holder should recognize the importance of effective communication within the team and will strive to: • Communicate effectively with other team members • Communicate effectively with patients and carers • Recognize people’s needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly. Contribution to the Implementation of Services The post-holder will: • Apply practice policies, standards and guidance • Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work • Participate in audit where appropriate. To assist Mortimer Surgery in reducing healthcare associated infections and maintaining high levels of infection control you should be familiar with the surgery’s IPC policy. • You must either complete online mandatory training or attend the in house annual IPC update. • You must be compliant with all standards relevant to your department at all times. • You are responsible for keeping your work area clean and tidy.
