The Coroners Service comprises a small team dedicated to providing support to the Senior Coroner by ensuring that the legislative and case management processes, as well as the planning and handling of inquests, are conducted efficiently and effectively.

Salary: £30,296 to £33,024 per annum (£18,177 to £ 19,814 pro rata for part time)

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract until February 2025. The end date will be confirmed with the successful candidate.

Working Pattern: Part-time (22.2 hours per week)

Location: County Hall North, Madeira Ave, Horsham RH12 1AB

You will need to be able to travel independently around the county, including to areas that may not be easily accessible by public transport. Pool cars and pool bikes available.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a dedicated professional to join the Coroners Service. In this role, you will act as a single point of contact providing immediate support and guidance to bereaved families following sudden and unexpected death.

Working directly with the HM Senior and Area Coroners for West Sussex, bereaved families and a variety of third-party agencies, you will ensure that they are updated with the progress of the investigation and are provided with any necessary support.

Primarily you will be responsible for recording sudden and unexpected death by inputting referred cases on the Coroners database and updating families, professionals and witnesses of case progression in compliance with Coroner's and Justice Act 2009, Coroner's (Investigations) Regulations 2013, Coroner's (Inquests) Rules 2013 and the Chief Coroner's Guidance.

You will be assigned a number of 'designated powers' when appropriate by the Coroner. You will be expected to discharge such powers professionally, legally and proportionately.

About You

To succeed at this role, you will have personal resilience and professionalism when dealing with potentially sensitive, confidential, or distressing queries.

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate excellent communication skills and has a desire to use these in influencing stakeholders.

You will need to be able to manage your own workload, working flexibly, multi- tasking and balancing different priorities effectively to meet the needs of the bereaved, HM Coroners and partner agencies.

You will have keen attention to detail, be comfortable working independently and be at ease in this fast-paced, agile environment with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads, and priorities.
