Job description


The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, a world-leading cancer centre, is looking for a dynamic Senior PR and Communications Officer to be part of busy in-house communications team. The successful applicant will have excellent external and internal communications skills, public relations and media expertise, and strong editorial and management capability which will ensure the Trust can achieve its strategic communications objectives and promote the Trust’s thought leadership and reputation as the leading oncology voice in Europe. They will work across the organisation including The Royal Marsden Private Care, The Royal Marsden School, and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. As part of a team of 12, they will work closely with the Head of PR and Communications, and colleagues within the wider Marketing and Communications Department as well as staff across the Trust and Charity including clinicians and researchers, and external stakeholders including The Institute of Cancer Research, NHS England and NHS London.

To develop and implement the Trust’s public relations and external and internal communications strategies. To deliver both a proactive and reactive plan to raise the profile and understanding of the work of the Trust, enhance its reputation and promote awareness of its aims and achievements in ways which are appropriate for the different audiences (including patients, families, staff, supporters, governors and members and others within the wider NHS, the public).

• Provide a comprehensive media service, particularly around the proactive sell-in of a positive news agenda from The Royal Marsden, including thought leadership pieces and focus on the areas in which the organisation lead.
• Work across all areas of The Royal Marsden, including The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, Private Care, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, The Royal Marsden School and The Royal Marsden Community Services to identify communications opportunities and respond to queries.
• Work with documentary film makers and production companies on documentaries featuring Royal Marsden patients and staff which are filmed on Trust property, negotiating filming contracts as applicable.
• Identify and exploit opportunities to promote The Royal Marsden’s ‘thought leadership’ agenda working with the Science Media Centre as appropriate, in order to enhance the Trust presence in the media as a key voice of authority on oncology and also driving a positive public image
• Identify and promote appropriate media opportunities for mainstream and trade media, and establish relationships with key members of staff, patients, volunteers, fundraisers and others connected with the Trust and Charity.
• As part of the PR and Communications Team, carry out interviews and develop content for RM, Private Care, Advance and Progress magazines, liaising with senior clinical colleagues, and case studies.
• Populate the Trust case study database through collation patient and supporter case studies which demonstrate relevant examples of the work of the Trust and Charity and their patient impact.
