Job description

The Role

As a Trainee Careers Adviser, you will join our supportive and hard-working team in Carlisle. We would specifically be interested to hear from people with an interest of, or previous experience of, working with adults, particularly those who are long term unemployed.

You will:
• Offer individualised careers advice and guidance tailored to meet the specific needs, and aspirations of SEND pupils,
• Work closely with teachers, special education coordinators, and other professionals to align career guidance with other support provided to SEN pupils,
• Work collaboratively with young people, families and other professionals to ensure smooth transition planning from school to next steps,
• Develop partnership working with employers, training and educational providers, community organisations to support inclusive opportunities for SEND young people.

This post is permanent. The hours of work for this position are 37 per week, however requests for part time hours will also be considered.

About You

You should have enthusiasm for working with young people with SEND, be able to adapt to young people’s needs and have strong communication, advocacy and interpersonal skills. The role would suit those with an understanding of the SEND landscape and the range of available provision.

This position offers the opportunity for real life work experience and skills building whilst gaining a formal Careers, Information and Advice qualification. We would be pleased to hear from recent graduates or those wanting a career change!

You will have:
• The ability to thrive in a busy and varied work environment
• A good standard of literacy and numeracy (GCSE grade 4 / C or equivalent)
• The ability to identify, establish and maintain effective working partnerships for the benefit of customers
• The ability to keep accurate and up to date records with a good attention to detail. This includes data entry on electronic systems
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• The ability to respond to demanding pressures and to meet deadlines
• An ability to work on own initiative and a proactive approach to problem solving
