Job description


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Healthcare Science Practitioner at University Hospitals Dorset.

The post-holder will be educated to a minimum of degree level and have experience in healthcare setting. They will also have an interest in audit, research and development and be interested in research activity.

The post holder will possess excellent written communication skills, the ability to organise a busy workload whilst remaining calm under pressure. They must be well motivated and be flexible to the needs of the service with a “can do” attitude. They must also be a strong team player with plenty of initiative, imagination and determination to make a difference. The Clinical Measurement department is a busy service providing high quality care in a range of specialties including gastroenterology and colorectal surgery.

This post is a full time permanent role based at UHS but may require working at different locations. The service runs Monday to Friday 8-6pm with a view to potentially providing services over seven days in the future. Part time working and candidates who do not fulfil the required essential criteria may still be considered where appropriate.

The post holder will assist in the provision and development of existing Clinical Measurement Services under the direction of the Head of Clinical Measurement. This will include assisting with and performing a range of patient investigations independently or with minimal supervision and data analysis where appropriate and agreed with the Head of Clinical Measurement.

The procedures for which the post-holder will be appropriately trained and competent to perform include:
• ABPI/ Doppler ankle pressure measurement
• Fibroscan
• Hydrogen and methane breath testing

The post holder will be expected to work within their job plan, and under the direction of the senior team. They will be expected to perform the following activities independently:
• Monitor and order stocks of consumables and identify shortages before there is any impact on services
• Perform and write up regular audits as required e.g. hand washing and housekeeping audits
• Plan ahead and prepare paperwork for upcoming investigations.
• Set-up clinical rooms and perform pre-investigation checks as required
• Perform post-investigation cleaning/ decontamination of the clinical rooms

Where the Head of Clinical Measurement has signed off competence and agreed to the procedure being performed and/or analysed, the post-holder will be expected to work independently or with other members of the clinical team.

This will require the following:
• Set up the equipment for the procedure, performing initial checks and calibrations where required and the correct patient entered.
• Welcome the patient, check ID, introduce themselves
• Clearly explain the nature of the procedure including the necessary preparations for the procedure
• Assist the patient where necessary, for instance helping with safe transfer onto an examination couch.
• Obtain and confirm informed consent including for use of anonymised data for purposes of audit etc.
• Competently perform the procedure, including checking the validity of any
• measurements obtained and making such modifications as are necessary in order to obtain results of optimal quality
• Talk to the patient throughout, giving clear guidance and reassurance.
• Cleaning and decontamination of equipment
• Perform initial data analysis where competence has been signed-off

The post holder will assist in the provision and development of existing Clinical Measurement Services under the direction of the Head of Clinical Measurement. The post holder will also provide a supporting role for the the following procedures including:High resolution anorectal physiology,Oesophageal manometry and pH/impedance measurement,Endoanal ultrasound,Fibroscan,Capsule endoscopy,SNS programming andAutonomic function testing.

The post holder will assist with booking of patient appointments, issuing letters of invitation, recording patient visits in the radiology information system and other patient-related administration tasks.
