Summary
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is looking for an Accident Investigator to enhance our Health and Safety Team based at our Service Headquarters in Exeter. You'll join us on a Casual Ad-hoc Agreement, and will receive a competitive hourly rate of £18.53 per hour for any work undertaken.

About the role:
As our Accident Investigator, you will conduct assigned Level 3 & significant Level 2 safety event / near miss investigations in order to identify the root cause and key learning. This will support the Service drive for staff safety and promote a positive safety culture through the investigation and learning from these accidents, incidents and near misses. Additionally, you will act as Level 3 Safety Event / Near Miss Investigator for the Service as required.

Key responsibilities of an Accident Investigator:
- Undertaking the investigation of Safety Events / Near Misses as directed.
- Carrying out site visits, safety inspections/audits, meetings as necessary as part of the investigation process.
- Liaising with HR Managers / Officers, the Occupational Health Department, and the Risk Manager on all Safety Events where there is an actual loss or loss potential.
- Liaising with the Head of Organisational Assurance where there are issues that could affect the Health, Safety and Welfare of operational personnel.
- Attending exercise and debriefing sessions as part of the investigation as requested.
- Assisting with the production of safety critical messages or supporting communications to reduce the risks identified within the investigation.
- Liaising directly with Service personnel or 3rd parties as part of the investigation.
- Ensuring the Estate / Fleet and Engineering / Academy departments are informed for all property / fleet / training risks and that these are given a suitable priority, including findings that pertain to these departments.
- Updating the safety management system with their findings, uploading evidence as necessary.
- Maintaining security and confidentiality of information, whether computer based or otherwise in line with legislation, i.e. Data Protection Act / GDPR and all related DSFRS Policies.
- Maintaining professional knowledge by networking, attending training courses and reviewing professional publications.
- Actively promoting the Service's Core Values and complying with Equality, Diversity and all Service policies.
- Performing tasks in a safe manner in accordance with Health and Safety policies and legislation.
What we are looking for in our Accident Investigator:
- Up to date knowledge of Fire and Rescue Service activities.
- Holder of a Senior Accident Investigator qualification.
- Experience as a senior accident investigator, with evidence of conducting complex investigations.
- Experience in reviewing Health and Safety policy and processes.
- Experience of working with managers and staff at all levels.
- Proven background of working in a Senior Investigator role.
- Excellent oral written communication skills (including comprehensive and accurate report writing).
- High level problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- An understanding of the principles of Risk Assessment, 'safe person' concept and dynamic and systematic risk assessment.
- Competent and proficient in the delivery of information and in the use of related (ICT) skills (Microsoft suite).
- Current valid driving licence; able and wiling to travel throughout the Service area and, if required, beyond these boundaries.
