Job description


The Department

The team covers both St Helier and Epsom sites. Duties are planned to avoid cross-site travel in a given day. Flexible working arrangements are encouraged to maintain service need and work-life balance.

The clinical caseload is general rheumatology at both hospitals. Clinics follow a hybrid model with the opportunity to have face-to-face, telephone, video (attend anywhere) slots as per clinician preference.

We also run speciality clinics as listed below. We support sub-specialist interests and there is opportunity to support the expansion of existing services especially for inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue disease/vasculitis. There is also opportunity to develop new sub-speciality areas.

Current speciality clinics:
• Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Clinic (once monthly)
• Combined Renal Clinic (Once weekly)
• Early Inflammatory Arthritis (EIA) Clinic with one stop Ultrasound Diagnostics.
• Hot clinics to fast-track GCA, CTD and EIA patients (prospective rota 1:5 covered by all consultants)
• Metabolic bone clinic (Once weekly).

Epsom & St Helier Hospital are looking for a dynamic, passionate and conscientious Consultant to join our specialist Team.

This 6 PA post in Rheumatology will be working across both the St Helier and Epsom Hospital sites and will support the further development of Rheumatology service. Expertise in any sub-speciality which enhances the department’s reputation would also be desirable. We would particularly welcome applicants with an interest in Myositis/ connective tissue disease or interstitial lung disease.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust offers an extensive range of services, including cancer, pathology, surgery, and gynaecology to over 490,000 people in south west London and north east Surrey. We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, and run services from other locations, including Sutton Hospital.

St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).

The Trust also plays an active role in the local healthcare economy. Surrey Downs Health and Care brings together our staff, CSH and the GP groups in Surrey Downs, and Surrey County Council in a partnership to improve care for local people. Also health and care teams from organisations (the London Borough of Sutton, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Sutton GP services, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and South West London & St George’s Mental Health Trust) across Sutton that provide care to Sutton’s older population are coming together to work as one team.

1. To show dynamism, enthusiasm and flexibility in participating in the reshaping of the rheumatology services at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and to work closely with the Clinical Leads and Clinical Director of Medicine.
2. To help provide a first-class clinical service to all Trust patients.
3. To provide high quality leadership and support to medical staff, allied health care professionals, Trust management and support staff across the areas.
4. To support and sustain teaching and research where possible in relevant clinical areas.
5. To work within the framework of applicable Trust policies, procedures, and clinical governance framework.
6. To work within contractual requirements, and in support of applicable Trust clinical development frameworks, business plans, and development strategies.

Principle Duties of the Post

The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients.
1. To at all times, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time. Consultant in Rheumatology
2. To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Lead and Clinical Director.
4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).
6. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
7. To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and out-patients under your care.
