Job description

As a consultant in stroke medicine, the individual holds continual responsibility for patient care and associated administrative duties. They work closely with A&E consultant colleagues to enhance the management of stroke patients, ensuring the achievement of Trust targets such as the 4-hour A&E to HASU target and other clinical quality indicators specific to stroke patients. It is essential for them to stay updated on stroke service commissioning, contracting, and regional strategies. In addition to their primary responsibilities, the consultant provides cover for team colleagues during their leave periods, ensuring that the workload is shared equally. They are also open to undertaking any other duties appropriate for a consultant, which can be negotiated and reflected in the job plans of the team. The consultant must maintain a continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their charge, ensuring safe handover when necessary. They actively engage with the care of patients outside the department and provide prompt opinions upon request from consultant colleagues in other specialties. Furthermore, the consultant actively participates in and supports education, research, audit, and clinical governance activities involving a multi-disciplinary workforce across the department. They contribute to the professional training of both medical and non-medical staff within the department, as well as teaching sessions for other hospital staff, undergraduate students, and postgraduate staff. The consultant also supports recruitment, appraisal, development, and mentoring activities for the multi-disciplinary and multi-professional team. Overall, their role is focused on providing clinical leadership, improving the patient experience, and ensuring the highest quality of clinical care within the department. This role presents an exciting opportunity for collaboration and skill expansion as it is open to combining with Neurology, Senior Adult Medical Services, Geriatrics or Care of the Elderly. By integrating with these additional areas, the consultant will have the chance to work closely with experts from different specialties, fostering collaboration and widening their skill set. There may be opportunities to work directly within the additional service on our SAMs and Geriatrics wards, or provide neurology inpatient services. While the consultant will have involvement in multiple areas, the stroke service will remain their primary responsibility. This means that they will primarily focus on stroke medicine, ensuring the highest quality of care and meeting the specific needs of stroke patients. Upon employment, a job plan will be discussed and negotiated to establish clear expectations and responsibilities, taking into account the various components of this multi-faceted role. Overall, this opportunity allows the consultant to expand their professional horizons, collaborate with experts from different fields, and enhance their skill set while still maintaining their primary responsibility within the stroke service. The negotiation of a comprehensive job plan will ensure clarity and alignment with the expectations of the role.
