What does a Scientific Technical Operations Specialist do? As a Scientific Technical Operations Specialist, you are a vital member of the laboratory team. You will support the daily laboratory functions, ensuring that equipment and monitoring systems are onboarded, maintained, qualified and ready for use by the scientists. This will include drafting qualification protocols, risk assessments and SOPs, coordinating equipment maintenance contracts and engineer visits, trouble shooting and management of the facilities and equipment tracking system whilst adhering to the quality management system. You will also be required to support with the management of the UK capital expenditure budget, co-ordination of the renewal of maintenance contracts and preparation of the annual maintenance budget.

We want someone who enjoys working well in a team but also is comfortable working independently. You will be very methodical, well organised and have a high level of attention to detail. This position welcomes candidates who have a degree in a scientific or engineering field, with 2-3 years' experience working within the pharmaceutical industry. Experience working with a quality management system and equipment validation procedures is preferred.

Position Summary Position title: Scientific Operations Specialist
Reports to: Head of Technical Operations
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Responsibility for purchasing new equipment and overseeing laboratory modifications, in line with the requirements set out in the associated SOPs and responsibility for timelines, resource and budget for assigned projects.
- To assist the Head of Technical Operations with the yearly CapEx budget, including holding monthly meetings with Department Heads, assisting Finance with spending forecasts, and collation of the budget for the next financial year.
- To assist with the routine maintenance of equipment in line with project timelines, service contract renewals, UK site maintenance budget and to ensure that the FEQP tracker is reviewed monthly for upcoming and overdue maintenance.
- Assist with basic troubleshooting of generic lab equipment and arranging engineer visits to fix broken equipment.
- Drafting new and updating existing current SOPs, Forms and qualification protocols for new and current equipment and procedures relating to the equipment life cycle.
- To assist the Head of Technical operations with activities within continuous improvement initiatives.
- To retire / withdraw equipment as required and in line with MedPharm’s internal procedures.
- To ensure that all equipment is kept clean and tidy, and equipment logbooks are kept up to date and archived in line with the associated SOPs.
- To assist with the reviewing of equipment logbooks.
- To assist the Laboratory Operations Team Leader and team as required.
- To report any issues with the facility to the Facilities Team.
- To take responsibility for accompanying contractors as required.
- To assist with the training of Junior team members.
- To promptly report any issues or deviations from SOPs to the Head of Technical Operations and QA.
- To ensure all GXP regulations and MedPharm SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) are adhered to within the laboratory environment
- To ensure all activities are undertaken in line with MedPharm H&S policies and COSHH regulations and to always ensure the safety of others.
- To maintain your personal training record.
- To perform any other tasks at request of the Management.
Candidate Requirements Education - A level (or equivalent), and / or a degree in a science or engineering related field
Experience/Traits/Skills - Minimum of 2-year experience working within the pharmaceutical industry
- Experience working with GLP and GMP would be preferred.
- Experience working with quality management systems and equipment / validation related quality records would be preferred.
- Must have a meticulous approach to work and be highly organized.
- Good communication skills, both written and oral.
- Must be able to multitask, manage time efficiently and be able to prioritize.
- Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
