Job description
The role of Treasurer is pivotal for the charity. As an officer, you will work alongside the Chair, Vice-Chairs (if appointed) and Secretary to provide leadership and direction to the charity, alongside and as part of the wider Trustee Board.
What will you be doing?Alongside the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer has the following specific responsibilities, as part of the wider Trustee team:
Take lead responsibility for ensuring BuDS has and uses effective and proper accounting, budgetary and financial control systems, including SAGE accountancy software, including compliance with the Charity Commission SORP and all other required and recommended best practice standards.
Supervise and support the BuDS finance team of staff and volunteers dealing with day-to-day bookkeeping, financial admin, payments and banking (the Treasurer does not need to do this work)
Counter-sign charity cheques and financial instruments (including any electronic transactions).
Liaise with the charity’s auditors or independent examiner, where appropriate and take lead responsibility within BuDS for implementing any recommendations by auditors .
Take lead responsibility for ensuring that the BuDS annual accounts and financial notes are prepared in good time and submitted to the Annual General Meeting and Charity Commission on time.
Ensure that the Board of Trustees is properly and adequately informed about all financial matters and the current and future financial viability of the organisation and in particular that formal Trustee meetings are presented with up-to-date monthly management accounts including a cash flow projection.
With the other officers, take forward BuDS’s change of legal form from an unincorporated association to a charitable company limited by guarantee, including in due course acting as the Treasurer to the charitable company.
With the other officers, contribute to the charity’s Strategic Plan and support strategic planning meetings and developments.
As an officer, be a signatory for the charity on agreements, invoices, payments, etc.
Strong knowledge and understanding of charity finance and accounting issues including the SORP
Ideally, be a qualified or part-qualified accountant or have similar professional qualifications
Ideally, knowledge of SAFE accounting software (BuDS uses Line 50 with the charity module)
Ability to use Microsoft/Office 365 applications including Teams, Outlook and Word (training available)
Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills and able to act as a senior representative of the charity
Ability to work in a highly organised way and act with initiative where appropriate
Able to identify problems and provide solutions
Flexible and positive approach
Ability to present information clearly, concisely, accurately and relevantly in ways that promote understanding
The ability to commit to a minimum of 12 hours per mon
