Secretary

The Textile Society

Location

Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire | United Kingdom

Job description

We empower students and professionals to engage with textiles through our bursaries and awards. The Secretary is key to making this happen - you'll keep our governance on track so we can fulfil our charitable aims.

What will you be doing?

In liaison with the Chair, the Secretary manages the meetings of the Executive Committee. They'll ensure that any decisions taken are in line with the Constitution and serve to further the Society's charitable aims. Key responsibilities include agenda setting, preparing meeting packs, and minuting.

The Secretary will support on policy development and improving efficiency across the charity - we've made strides recently with shifting everything to Google Drive and meeting virtually, but there's more we can do and this will be a focus for the Secretary role.

A key challenge for the Committee is in managing workload. We are a small group of volunteers managing a breadth of activity including event planning, awards cycles, financial planning, publicity etc., so the Secretary role will support in bringing on new volunteers to manage activity. We'll be looking into establishing working groups and sub-committees to spread the work, so for the remainder of 2023 setting these up and building our volunteer base will be a key focus for the Secretary and the Committee.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for someone with strong administration skills and experience working with committees, either as a member or in a support function. You should be confident in your ability to prepare meeting packs and take minutes.

Experience of developing and working with policy is a real plus, but not essential as this can be developed.

We're looking for someone who doesn't accept things because "this is the way we've always done it" - the charity has just passed its 40th year, and to make sure we thrive in the next 40 years we'll need to be constantly looking to improve.

Experience inducting and working with volunteers would be a bonus, as we'll be looking to expand our pool of volunteers over the coming months.

What difference will you make?

The Secretary is a full voting member of the Executive Committee so is responsible for jointly setting the direction of the charity. The decisions we make will directly impact on the availability of funding for students and professionals in the field of textiles, so this is a role with a high impact.

Before you apply

Please apply through Reach in the first instance. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an informal GoogleMeet chat with the Chair and Secretary to discuss the role in more detail.
