Job Title: Sixth Form Pastoral Mentor
Salary: £27,334 - £29,777 grade 6
Hours: 37 hours per week, full-time as part of permanent contract.
Ron Dearing University Technical College (RDUTC), based in Hull, seeks an inspirational and skilled Pastoral Mentor to join our friendly and dedicated Sixth Form Student Support Team, ideally from 1st May 2024.
High quality pastoral care and support is the bedrock of the school and our pastoral team is absolutely integral to the success of students.
RDUTC is an Outstanding school for 14-19 year olds specialising in Maths, Sciences, Engineering, Art & Design, iMedia and Digital Technologies. There are 400 students in our high-performing Sixth Form.
Working in close partnership with The University of Hull and the region’s leading employers, we provide students with an exciting, unique, employer-engaged education to ensure that they acquire the academic and technical qualifications and the personal and employability skills they need to give them the edge in the competitive UCAS and employment markets.

Working with the Senior Assistant Principals (SAP) and other Pastoral Mentors
- Establish and maintain a positive ethos and identity within the Sixth Form
- Establish and maintain excellent relationships with students, staff and parents/carers
- Provide high quality pastoral care for students
- Promote high levels of attendance and punctuality
- Support students to achieve appropriate post-18 destinations, including supporting UCAS and apprenticeship applications
- Manage record keeping for Year 12 and 13 students
- Promote positive attitudes with students towards education and encourage and support them to benefit fully from the opportunities available at RDUTC
Specific Responsibilities
- Monitor attendance and punctuality of students, identifying concerns promptly
- Implement and monitor improvement strategies to address attendance concerns, including carrying out home visits, working with the Attendance Officer and EWO and contributing to Attendance Support Plans
- Monitor student behaviour in independent study areas to ensure a calm and purposeful working environment, in line with the PVB policy
- Support designated students to plan their use of independent study time to maximise progress
- Provide formal supervision and support for identified students during their independent study time
- Provide support for identified students for coursework catch-up
- Monitor student attendance to intervention sessions, liaising with the SAPs and relevant HoD/teachers to address lack of engagement.
- Provide support for students to complete applications for university and apprenticeships
- Provide 1-2-1 support to designated students with additional emotional health and well-being needs
- Liaise with external agencies where necessary, including attending and contributing to meetings, record-keeping and passing on information to relevant school staff
- Attend and contribute to Y12 and Y13 Parent Consultation Events
- Attend and contribute to Recruitment Open Events and evenings
- Maintain accurate records for students
- Organise and promote social activities within the Sixth Form
- Carry out break duties
- Support Enrichment activities
- Attend Exam Results Days in August
- Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding and actively promote the safety and well-being of students whilst on the school site and when involved in school activities
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relation to child protection and all aspects of safeguarding children
