They are seeking a Principal Civil Design Engineer to join their team on a permanent, full-time basis in either the Coventry, Derby or Shrewsbury area.



Commutable from: East Midlands, West Midlands, Coventry, Birmingham, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham.

The Role:

• The Principal Civil Design Engineer will lead on all technical aspects of feasibility and design for a variety of water infrastructure projects.
• Carry out feasibility assessments for projects within programmed timescales and within agreed feasibility budgets undertaking site visits, scoping and management of surveys and analysis of data.
• Create designs & specifications which include consideration of health & safety; environment; buildability; customer impact; third party constraints/permissions/approvals; commissioning; operation and maintenance; appropriate legislation and regulations and all geotechnical, structural and hydraulic aspects.
• The Principal Design Engineer shall lead on the Quality Assurance process for checking, reviewing and approving the team’s in-house design deliverables.
• Support the NEC Project Manager in their obligation to provide Design Acceptance.
• Work with a range of key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of solutions.

The Person


The Principal Civil Design Engineer will possess strong communication, report writing and presentation skills whereby you shall deliver through others, delegating work and responsibilities appropriately to ensure that design objectives are met.


You must have a strength of character to challenge designs and ensure they meet the businesses specifications. The incumbent will have a strong personal discipline and able to work within boundaries and parameters but can also make clear and effective decisions whilst building good working relationships across the team and wider business.


As a visible leader, there will be a strong emphasis on coaching and mentoring the team to ensure potentials are met and upskilling is an everyday part of the role. You will be responsible for team membership, actively contributing to discussions and constructively challenging designs for continuous improvement.



Experience Required for the Principal Civil Design Engineer

• Water sector experience.
• Previously held the role of a Leading Designer (CDM regulations).
• Experience of providing designs and specifications for water infrastructure projects.
• Proven innovation of design to assist with the development of innovative solutions in the delivery of water infrastructure projects.
• Strong coaching skills and experience of building capability within a Design team.
• Able to implement CDM regulations in the design process.
• Previous experience of working closely with supply chain in delivering projects.
• Demonstrated experience of the considerations given to risk management in construction and ops design.
