Opportunity: 6 month Returnship as part of the Insurance Cross Company 2024 Returner Programme

First Central is delighted to be participating in the Insurance Cross Company 2024 Returner Programme , providing supported routes back to employment for individuals returning to work. Supported by Career Returners (previously Women Returners), First Central are offering a 6 month paid placement starting in May 2024. Full transition support is provided to help you navigate your way back to employment. Applications are open now and will close on 15th March 2024.

Your Programme:

The programme offers a professionally paid placement of 6 months, from May to November 2024.

There will be a strong likelihood of a permanent role at the end of the programme.

To support your transition back into the workplace, you will receive an internal mentor and a buddy for your day-to-day questions.

You will benefit from Career Returners’ Coaching Programme throughout your time on the programme.

As part of the Insurance cross-company programme, you will have a ready-made peer support group of other returners re-entering the Insurance sector.

Your role:

As our next Data Engineer , you'll be hands-on, providing technical data solution build on projects and for persistent data products. The role will involve taking responsibility for designing and implementing data pipelines and database population, ensuring alignment of data solutions to the technical design and overall data platform patterns.

Could you fit the bill? We're big on working flexibly - you'll spend most of your time working from home, with the occasional visit to the office, but of course, it’s your choice - if you prefer to be in the office more - that's good with us too. We've offices located in  Haywards Heath, West Sussex and Salford Quays, Manchester  it’s your choice - or maybe you live further afield, we will accept applications for remote workers!

Your responsibilities:

• Develop low to high complexity, secure, governed, high quality, efficient data pipelines from a variety of on and off premise, internal and external data sources.
• Ensure that data is cleansed, mapped, transformed, and optimised for storage to meet requirements for business and technical use cases.
• Build data observability and data quality by design into all Data pipelines, promoting self-testing pipelines that proactively identify processing issues or discrepancies.
• Build solutions that pipe transform data into data lake storage areas, physical database models and reporting structures across data lake, data warehouse, business intelligence systems and analytics applications.
• Build physical data models that are appropriately designed to meet business needs and optimise storage requirements, ensuring maximum re-use.
• Carry out unit testing of own code, and peer testing of others code to ensure appropriate quality.
• Maintain effective, and appropriate documentation that brings transparency and understandability to pipelines created and code created.
• Follow coding standards, architectural principles, solution design/architecture and release management processes to ensure safe, high quality, compliant code.
• Coach and mentor Associate data engineers.
• Create low to high complexity BI solutions including data mart, semantic layer, and reporting & visualisation solutions in recognised BI tools such as PowerBI.

Your experience and skills:

• Experience of designing and building end to end data solutions
• Engineering and database skills in SQL Server and/or Azure (Datafactory, Synapse) and the associated ETL technologies.
• Experience of working with large, event based, datasets in an enterprise environment.
• Experience of testing techniques and tools.
• Proven to be an excellent communicator with an desire to build rapport with others.
• Keen and active interest in the use of data, with active external networks.
• Brings ideas on how data can drive value for businesses.
• Good understanding of the full data lifecycle.
• Experience of Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD)
• Experience of working in an agile environment and self-managing teams
• Proactive and optimistic about what can be achieved.
• Very good time management and organisation skills with the ability to prioritise multiple demands.
• Supporting and enthusiastic team player focussed on delivering shared outcomes.
• Comfortable advising and supporting less experienced engineers.
• Energetic and proactive, and someone who motivates others by their “can do, will do” attitude.
• Able to follow, and make recommendations to improve, standards and designs, ensuring their work is of high quality.

Eligibility Criteria:

To apply for this programme, you must have the right to work in the UK. Sponsorship will not be provided. 

Your career break must be 18 months or more as of May 2024. You may have been working on a small-scale basis to fit around your other commitments or have not done any paid work for a minimum 18 month period.
