Could you be the next Chief Executive of this unique National Park?
The Lake District is England’s largest National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was one of the first areas to be designated a National Park in 1951. It is protected because of its beautiful countryside, wildlife and cultural heritage. With fantastic opportunities for recreation to support the nation’s health and wellbeing, millions of people visit each year to enjoy this unique example of a living working landscape. The National Park also provides many crucial services for our local communities, businesses and visitors, and includes the provision of food and water, carbon storage, clean air, flood regulation, aesthetic value, inspiration, heritage and opportunities for recreation. With 12 of the largest lakes in England and 3,105km of rights of way, this truly is one of Britain's best breathing spaces.
Our 2030 Vision for the Lake District is that it will be an inspirational example of sustainable development in action, where its prosperous economy, world class visitor experiences and vibrant communities come together to sustain the spectacular landscape, its wildlife and cultural heritage.
Highly visible in the communities we serve, the Chief Executive provides strategic leadership and management to the Lake District National Park, playing a pivotal role in setting and delivering the vision and strategy of the LDNPA working closely with the Authority Members, Executive Board and other key internal and external stakeholders. Responsible and accountable for the day-to-day operations of the Authority, with 200 staff and up to 400 volunteers, our Chief Executive is accountable for a budget of circa £17m and a demanding range of responsibilities. Key to it all is providing leadership, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence, promoting environmental stewardship, and contributing to the overall conservation, enjoyment, and sustainable development of the Lake District National Park.
To be successful, you will bring a track record of inspirational leadership experience and will share our passion for the Lake District and its spectacular landscape. You will be calm, confident and resilient under pressure, with a natural aptitude for building positive and trusted relationships, and with the ability to convene individuals and organisations with different views around a shared vision for delivery. You will have experience of driving engagement, growth and sustainability, be politically astute and be confident managing complex budgets and experience of generating creative new revenue streams. We are open to a wide variety of career background, but you will need to have a deep appreciation of the unique role of National Parks and sufficient understanding of conservation management, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development practices to be credible with staff and stakeholders.
This is a demanding role that will require passion, patience and stamina. But the potential for impact on this special place and its people is worth it.
If you believe you have the right qualities and experience to lead the Authority and champion the Lake District we very much look forward to hearing from you.
