Location: Highfield Campus
Salary: £34,980 to £38,205
Full Time, Fixed Term
Closing Date: Wednesday 13 March 2024
Interview Date: To be confirmed

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in black hole and galaxy evolution at the University of Southampton, to work with Dr. Sandra Raimundo. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team of researchers at the University of Southampton who work on a variety of observational and theoretical aspects of black holes, Active Galactic Nuclei and galaxy evolution.

The project you will be a part of is focussed on interacting galaxies with kinematically misaligned gas. You will be responsible for investigating the effects of misalignment on the stellar and gas properties of galaxies and their black holes using integral field spectroscopy data. There will be the opportunity for connecting the observational results with numerical simulations, to interact widely with other members of the Astronomy group and for you to lead your own independent research project.

To be successful you will have a PhD in Astronomy or Astrophysics. Experience with integral field spectroscopy data, Active Galactic Nuclei or galaxy evolution will be considered an asset but is not required.

To apply please supply by the application deadline: 1) a CV with a publication list; 2) a research statement (2 pages max) summarising past and future research interests and 3) a cover letter with the contact details of two referees. Reference letters will only be requested for shortlisted applicants.

In return, we offer you a welcoming and inclusive research environment and encourage those from under-represented groups in Physics and Astronomy to apply. In recognition of our strong commitment to diversity, we renewed our Athena SWAN Silver award in 2023 and were awarded the Institute of Physics Project Juno Champion status in 2019. Physics and Astronomy gives full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. Further information can be found here. The University also offers an attractive benefits package.

The post is available for a fixed term of 3 years, with a possible starting date as early as 1 April 2024. Informal enquiries about the position are very welcome and can be directed to Dr. Sandra Raimundo (E-mail: [email protected]).

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded, the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We believe equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to making the University of Southampton a welcoming, vibrant and successful organisation. Having a diverse workforce, inclusive of people of all ages and beliefs, from different racial backgrounds, educational and social backgrounds opens up a wealth of possibilities, makes us more creative and accelerates our impact on society. We welcome applicants that value diversity of our community and are willing to play their part in supporting the mission of inclusivity.

Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated on the job.
