Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our busy and dynamic Children’s Emergency department as a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). This is a newly created post to lead and drive links between Paediatrics and ED. The Children’s Emergency department at Stoke Mandeville has been purpose built and provides care to the children and young people of Buckinghamshire.
Applicants should possess, or be within 6 months of receiving, a CCT in Emergency Medicine or Paediatrics with at least 6 months experience in paediatric emergency medicine. Equivalent clinical experience will also be considered.
The successful applicants will join a workforce of consultants, which are planned to expand in line with College of Emergency Medicine recommendations.
With Emergency Medicine consultant colleagues, the appointee will provide and maintain the Children’s Emergency Medicine Service in the hospital.
• Examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of children. The patients remain the responsibility of the Emergency Department until they are referred to the inpatient team or discharged home.
• Supervision of junior / middle grade medical staff in the department during clinical PA’s and availability for advice and support to staff during on-call hours.
• Provision of emergency on-call services to the Emergency Department with other senior ED staff.
• Drive improvements between the Paediatric and Emergency departments
• Provide on-going training to junior and middle grade staff

The post holder will participate fully in the provision of Emergency Medicine including clinical governance and the delivery of both Trust and Department of Health Clinical Quality Indicators. The post will be based in the Emergency Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Clinical Responsibilities
Demonstrate strong clinical leadership when working clinically across the many areas of the department delivering excellent and high quality patient care and supporting the shift leader in the management of patient flow and activity through the department.
Provide Shop Floor presence from 08.00 – 00:00, 7 days a week, both in adults and paediatrics
Develop and revise Standard Operating Procedures for the Children’s Emergency Department.
Promote safe, effective care of children within the Children’s Emergency Department, including providing training to clinical and nursing staff
Work collaboratively with other clinical colleagues to further reform the urgent and emergency care pathway for children
The post holder is expected to spend at least 50% of their clinical time in the Children’s Emergency department, providing shop floor supervision and promoting clinical excellence in the care of children attending the Department.
Attend internal and external Stake Holder meetings as required

Participate in the professional supervision, management and teaching of the staff within the Emergency Department.

Participate in clinical audit across the department in line with Trust policy and guidelines Implement audit and research findings across the department.
Comply with the Trust clinical governance processes in a timely manner.
· The department arranges monthly academic half days focussing on lessons learnt, new developments in the field of emergency medicine and longitudinal case audits. The event is streamed live for all the team members to be able to watch from home as well as to watch it at a later time.

Supporting Professional Activities are undertaken by all Consultants in a collaborative manner based on SDU needs. We strongly encourage people to develop sub specialist interest according to the needs of the department.
Jobplan
There is scope for flexible working and we are keen to support a good work-life balance and Additional Programmed Activities. The current Consultants work a 10 PA job plan which includes 2.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities and 7.5 PA DCC. Weekend frequency is 1 in 6. On-call frequency is 1 in 12 weekdays and 1 in 12 weekends. Out of hours Pas are calculated at 3 hours per PA.
On call supplement is paid at Category A.
We have 6 shifts during the day: 2x 08-14, 1x 10-16, 2x 13-19 and 1x 18-00 and on call during weekdays.
During weekends, 1 x 08-16 and 1x 16-00 and on call.
We meet virtually every 3 months and complete our online self-rostering rota. The rota is managed internally and regulated by an ED Rota Team.
