Junior Data Engineer at Institute of Environmental Science & Research Limited, Canterbury

Te tūnga | The role

We have a full-time permanent opportunity for a Junior Data Engineer to work alongside experienced Data Engineers to deliver leading edge data pipelines and integrations, bringing together diverse and complex data to advance our organisation's scientific value. You will partner with our experts at ESR and our external partners across the Pacific region to derive meaningful value from data.

You will work on delivering overseas development projects in the Pacific region, with a focus on the delivery of information system development in the water and sanitation sectors in Pacific Island countries.

In this role you will be involved in:

• Supporting the development of scalable data ETL pipelines and API integrations to support the exploitation of diverse and complex datasets available to the data science group. This includes implementing processes and systems to monitor data quality throughout the life cycle of different projects.
• Working towards increasing data accessibility and fostering data-driven decision making across ESR. This will be accomplished by engaging in data analytics and business intelligence challenges across teams at ESR and in collaboration with external stakeholders.
• Working closely with project partners in Pacific Island countries, both remotely and on location in-country.

Please note there is a travel component to the role, where you may be required to travel and work in a Pacific Island country. Travel will be for approximately 5 to 10 days at a given time, every couple of months.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, IT, Data Engineering or related discipline.
• Familiarity with data mining and data visualisation.
• Knowledge of Python, R, and hands-on experience with SQL database design.
• Great numerical and analytical skills.
• Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Cross-cultural communication skills would be desirable, but not essential.
