Job Description

The Job entails performing but not limited to wet chemistry, physical chemistry and Combustion analysis.

A flexible attitude to work is essential and you will be expected to help out in other areas as both volume and type of work varies on a seasonal basis.

The jobholder is required to analyse samples and to provide accurate, precise and quality data using the analytical techniques as described by Standard Operating Procedures within the specified time limits and adhering to all safety criteria.

This involves completing allocated analytical work on time and to the required standards, working efficiently and effectively to minimise waste and time used, therefore maximising the efficiency and profitability of the laboratory.

It is expected that the work and its interpretation will be carried out competently with a large degree of independence.

Where applicable, work must be carried out to meet the current requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 as laid down by UKAS.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES AND MAIN DUTIES

To ensure that all the operations, procedures, policies and equipment within the Job Holders area of responsibility are maintained to the highest standards and conform to all UKAS requirements where required. To monitor the allocated work and interpret data generated and to alert management to any actual, or anticipated deviations from key objectives or timelines.

Ensure that all analyses are completed within agreed time scales, to all quality criteria and in the most cost-effective manner. To ensure that work is fully, accurately and promptly recorded and reported, for example on data sheets in the computer database and other documents to support the work programme. To communicate problems, results or progress to the management as required.

To check and validate where necessary all analytical work undertaken to ensure only the highest quality analytical data is presented for reporting. To make verbal reports to Section Management and other senior staff on a regular basis and as necessary, to continue efficient working.

To ensure all instruments used are cleaned, maintained and record books are kept up to date.

To observe stock control of chemicals and consumables and to order or alert supervisor of inadequate stocks.

To understand and follow Company policies and to ensure good standards are maintained for UKAS, safety and environmental standards (e.g. accident reporting, waste disposal). To alert Section Management of any deviations or deficiencies with work, equipment, safety or compliance.

Technical/Work-based Skills

Understanding of ISO, UKAS, audit procedures and methods.

Good laboratory skills and practices as well as food/feed chemistry and microbiology techniques

General Skills/Attributes

Must be able to work effectively and collaborate within own team and other sections.

Must take initiative and have the ability to conduct hands-on work.

Strong communication and influencing skills

Must possess the ability to handle multiple tasks with high attention to detail.

Highly organised and excellent time management skills.

Excellent Microsoft office skills.

Experience

Working well in a team and successfully managing more challenging responsibilities.

Qualification

Degree or higher in science (microbiology, chemistry, food chemistry/science)
