THE DEPARTMENT

Classics is a thriving department at Oundle, with ten Classicists on the staff and yearly success with Oxbridge applicants. The school believes that Classics has much to offer the intellectual, social, artistic, moral, and cultural development of our pupils: all pupils study Latin in First to Third Form.

While we focus primarily on language acquisition, we also explore a variety of history and civilisation topics as well. We enjoy reading Greek and Latin authors in the original language with sets of all abilities, sometimes even in Third Form. In Third Form, when most pupils join the school, Latin is taught in ten sets across three bands of ability and experience, including ab initio.

THE TOWN

Oundle is a historic market town in Northamptonshire, famous for its beautiful Georgian streets and impressive limestone buildings. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre. The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.
