POSITION OVERVIEW
The AVP, Fleet Technical Operations (UK) will play a pivotal role as a member of the leadership team within the UK hub and serve as key member of RCL Cruises Ltd. Board of Directors and Marine operations. Supports the RCL Cruises Ltd. vision, mission, and strategy by overseeing the fleet technical operations in the Marine department and the daily operational and financial management of the fleet operated by RCL Cruises, Ltd. Primary responsible for ensuring that the ships continuously operate in compliance with all company standards, policies, and appropriate practices and within the rules and regulations of the appropriate governing authorities and agencies. Oversees succession planning, training, evaluation, and development for key Marine Operations personnel shipboard and shoreside in close collaboration with RCG global marine supporting functions. Ensures close cooperation with the Marine Technology, Marine Operations and Fleet Captains of both RCI and CEL Cruises to ensure fully coordinated operation and administration of the RCG fleet. The Fleet Technical Directors are the Deputies for this position. The AVP, Fleet Technical Operations will oversee a staff of nine through 3 direct reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures that ships are operated in compliance with the policies of the corporation and within the rules and regulations of the appropriate governing authorities and agencies with special attention given to safety, security, and protection of the environment. Works closely with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies regulating the operation of our ships.
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders across the organization including the managing director of RCL Cruises Ltd.
- Monitors, oversees, and provides support and direction to the Fleet Technical Directors and Ship Managers for their assigned vessels. This includes operations, maintenance, repair, dry docking, and overall budget control.
- Responsible for the implementation and adoption of the RCG defined performance management metrics and tools, for monitoring the operation.
- Monitors the maintenance strategy and initiatives, coordinates, planning, and scheduling of dry-docks with the Marine Technology team.
- Monitors ongoing performance of each ship, maintains frequent communication with senior management (Captain, Staff Captain, Chief Engineer, and Hotel Director) and provides guidance / support through prompt and positive action.
- Follows up on resolution of technical issues with the Fleet Technical Directors.
- Works closely with the Fleet Technical Directors, Fleet Captains, Directors Marine Operations (nautical), the Brand Leaders and HR to select and assign ship Management teams and evaluate senior shipboard officers.
- With the Fleet Technical Directors, it represents RCG on damage claims by working closely with the Underwriter and Insurance Coordinator. Ensures documentation is provided and surveys are arranged for the associated claims.
- Ensures compliance with UK tonnage tax requirements including UK Cadet Program.
- Identifies and records any difficulties relating to the product, processes, and quality systems in the UK Marine Operations Department and leads initiatives to resolve or improve these issues, together with the Compliance & Marine Administration Manager.
- Identifies, obtains / creates efficiencies with technology, strategy, and operational experience.
- Represents the company with regulatory authorities such as Flag State Administrations, Classification Societies and Port State Control.
- Supports industry initiatives and represents the company and industry in maritime organizations and regulatory forums.
- Ensures close cooperation and strategic alignment with Miami-based Marine Operations teams to support brand objectives.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees the development and execution of marine budgets for RCL Cruises Ltd ships.
- Monitors the external environment and identifies opportunities (both operational and pricing) to fulfil the departments and the companies cost control strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Background as Deck Officer, Engine Officer, or Naval Architect
- 10-15 years’ experience with a shipping company, classification society or similar. Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited college or university or the international equivalent preferred
- Proven record of accomplishment of demonstrated successful results in a global organization
- Extensive knowledge of shipboard operations and marine industry
- Proven success as a senior executive in a global organization
- Strong leadership skills, combined with excellent communication skills
- Must have thorough understanding of regulatory and compliance maritime laws and regulations
- Strategic vision and problem-solving skills
- Proven leadership ability to direct a technical operation and fluency in both spoken and written English
- Maintains current knowledge of up-to-date technical research and relevant projects, plus maintains an oversight of innovative technology for use onboard Royal Caribbean ship.
- Maintains familiarity with shipboard organization structure and the workings of onboard Marine and Hotel operations.
- Proven ability to manage the financial aspects of the assigned function, including the successful identification of operating efficiencies. Manage headcount within an area. Manage a staff positively and productively by motivating, developing, and managing employees.
- Utilize and administer the disciplinary action process through coaching and counselling to improve performance or terminate employment.
- Also, prior experience in managerial coaching and team building in a similar environment. The incumbent may be required to travel frequently and on short notice.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to communicate effectively with various departments within the organization, both shipboard and shore side. Excellent interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Incumbent must be able to easily negotiate shipboard, dry dock and shipyard environments including climbing ladders, entering hatches, and other strenuous activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The normal working environment will be a standard office.
- However, the position requires considerable time onboard ships including accessing and inspecting all shipboard spaces, including machinery rooms, tanks, etc., which may require the ability to climb ladders, enter vertical hatches, and other strenuous activities.
- In addition, the position also requires regular visits to dry docks during ship maintenance and to shipyards during construction of new ships. Incumbent will be required to inspect all parts of a ship during dry dock and construction.
- Hearing and eye protection will frequently be required during ship, dry dock, and ship visits.
- Frequent domestic and international travel is required
