VISION AND PURPOSE

We would like you to join our dynamic Science Department at OSSMA! We're seeking a skilled educator to step into the role of Second in Department during a maternity leave cover. However, for the right candidate, this position offers the potential for further leadership opportunities beyond the initial term.

Reporting directly to the Director of Science, you'll collaborate closely to shape the future of science education at OSSMA. Your primary focus will be on elevating Teaching and Learning (T+L) practices within the classroom while contributing to the broader science curriculum in alignment with departmental leadership.

We're looking for a passionate educator with a proven track record in the classroom, eager to refine their teaching skills and contribute to departmental growth. As Second in Department, you'll deputise for the Director of Science & Head of Department when needed, ensuring continuity and excellence in science education at OSSMA.

In addition to fulfilling the vision & purpose of the role, the successful candidate will be responsible for (but not exclusive to) the following:

· The development of a high quality in class teaching resources

· The QA of resources developed and used by other staff

· Developing Schemes of Work (SOW) to ensure they are effective and align with the departmental vision

· Ensuring the T+L practices in science support the academy T+L vision and are underpinned by the key principles of Direct Instruction

· Provision of CPD to support staff in delivering high-quality lessons and creating appropriate resources

· To work in conjunction with the DoF to produce and deliver training sessions that target relevant areas of practice as identified through departmental Quality Assurance (QA)

· Being actively involved in the departmental QA processes to ensure areas for development within T+L are identified

· Contribute to appropriate curriculum changes to improve the implementation of quality science teaching

· Being at the forefront of educational research to ensure evidence informed teaching practices in science

· Working with the STEM coordinator to enhance the delivery of STEM in science

· Planning of purposeful improvement phases and interventions at appropriate points of the school year

· To provide motivation to the Science staff (teaching and support), and support to the Director of Faculty, in the creation of a highly effective Science team, particularly through their personal example.

· Adherence to the Academy’s rigorous procedures for recording, monitoring, analysing and acting upon a range of data including student attendance, punctuality, referrals and academic records from all subject areas

· To provide well-informed advice based on their knowledge of national developments to the Director of Science regarding curriculum innovation, the learning environment and resources for teaching & learning

· To maintain good links with all curriculum areas and SENCO to ensure the profile of science is embedded into all areas of the Academy

· To plan for good discipline and orderly conduct within the designated subject area through partnership working with the Heads of Year, other Heads of Department and those members of staff who provide intervention support for students.

· Collaboration with the Director of Science for appraisal and performance management

General responsibilities:

· To fulfil the general duties of a classroom teacher

· To undertake such other duties appropriate to the grade of the post as the principal may from time to time reasonably determine.
