As our Philanthropy Manager, you will put people in Yorkshire at the heart of everything you do, unite with colleagues and other organisations in this cause, and dare to think big and bold to make positive solutions happen. 

The Role 

As our Philanthropy Manager you will have experience of securing five- and six-figure gifts from individuals and family foundations (often involving a CEO and trustees), a solid basis in relationship fundraising, as well as a good understanding of data, research, donor stewardship and communications. 

Supporting the Head of Fundraising, you will build Yorkshire Cancer Research’s portfolio of major donors, delivering exceptional engagement and stewardship to help maximise income. You will also contribute towards the development and delivery of the charity’s fundraising strategy to ensure sufficient income is secured to enable Yorkshire Cancer Research to achieve its ambitious plans to save more lives in Yorkshire and beyond. 

Yorkshire Cancer Research is dedicated to funding research to give Yorkshire more life to live. This role provides an opportunity to make a difference to people at risk of, or who have, cancer by helping attract the funds that make this research possible. 

Specifically, you will: 

• Develop and be responsible for implementing Yorkshire Cancer Research’s major donor fundraising strategy, engaging relevant people across the charity, increasing awareness among key audiences, and playing a lead role in inspiring current and prospective donors. 
• Ensure that our major gift fundraising efforts build on and complement our wider fundraising, including legacy giving and corporate fundraising – and the work of our Local Volunteer Groups.  
• Work with the Head of Fundraising and other colleagues to refine and develop the charity’s Case for Support, creating a compelling narrative that will inspire philanthropic support. 
• Develop a portfolio of engagement opportunities for major donors to include events, communications, smaller dinners and meetings with senior people at the charity – ensuring these are responsive to the interests of donors and are appropriately planned and resourced.  
• Work with the Events Team to identify existing charity activities that will engage major donors and maximise income. 
• Lead on the development and implementation of prospect management procedures and reporting for major donors. This includes driving and reviewing the agenda for regular prospect tracking meetings and identifying other mechanisms for improving high value prospect management. 
• Ensure that donor records are accurate and kept up to date and that all information relating to donors is produced and stored in line with data protection regulations and best practice. 

About You 

To be considered for this role, you will need: 

• To have a degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline, or proven experience working in a similar role at a similar level. 
• To have relationship-building experience, preferably with major individual donors or associated family foundations. 
• To have used insight to inform decision-making. 
• To be able to work collaboratively and effectively in a matrix-management organisation. 
• To collaborate with other teams to develop appealing propositions and attractive marketing communication. 
• To develop clear Key Performance Indicators and reporting performance against them on both a regular and ad hoc basis. 
• To have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships. 
• To be happy to work independently and to ask for support where this is needed. Also likes to work with, and support, colleagues as part of a team working towards a common goal.  
• To have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an ability to use active listening skills, and write professionally and appropriately for a range of diverse audiences. 
• To have high levels of computer literacy with comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel and Outlook.
