Job description

To provide specialist psychological assessments of patients referred to the RCHT Paediatric Clinical Health Psychology Services based upon the appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the patients care. To formulate and implement plans for the treatment and/or management of a patients psychological and mental health needs, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patients problems, and employing methods of proven efficacy, across the full range of care settings. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for children, young people, carers, families, and groups, adjusting, and refining psychological formulations, drawing upon different explanatory models, and maintaining several provisional hypotheses. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and complex factors concerning historical, physiological/medical, social, and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, or group. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and discharge of patients whose problems are managed by the Department of Clinical Health Psychology. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to patients formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plan. To ensure liaison with the CAMHS team if the needs of the child or young person indicate their input is required. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual patients and to provide general advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management. To contribute to the care package for the patient and advising, where appropriate, on the work of others involved with care. To attend patient reviews as required and communicate effectively with the patient, his/her family and all others involved in the network of care. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation, and treatment plans of patients and to monitor and evaluate progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care. The information may not be well received in all cases and there may be barriers to understanding due to patients presenting difficulties. Work will involve dealing with Safeguarding issues and the high levels of anxiety that this can evoke.
