Job description
The Science Department at St George’s College are lively, flourishing and friendly. They comprise twenty two staff and we have a suite of sixteen laboratories supported by eight technicians.
We are looking for an enthusiastic (Part-Time) teacher from September 2024 for one year. The teacher must be a good communicator, enjoying both the practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. The teacher will have the ability to teach across the full age range in Biology and Science at KS3.
Lower school science is based heavily upon the National Curriculum. It is coordinated in the first two years and taught by individual subject specialists in the third year, when the GCSE Biology course is started. At GCSE students currently opt for either Double award Science or all three separate sciences and they follow the Edexcel IGCSE specifications. At A Level the Edexcel specification (Salters-Nuffield A) is followed, with the department also assisting pupils with their applications to Oxbridge.
In Biology the emphasis throughout all years is on practical work. All U6 students attend a local field course in Dorking, where statistical theory is put in to practice, and during the Summer Term, Third Year (Year 9) students spend time in the school grounds working on the Ecology aspect of the course. Staff and U6 students participate in a lunchtime discussion group looking at the current trends in Biology and there is a lively First Year Science Club too. A number of national competitions are entered, namely the Royal Society’s Biology Challenge (Fourth Year), Intermediate Olympiad (Lower Sixth) and the Olympiad (Upper Sixth). We currently have three students taking part in the selection process for the UK Biology Olympiad team.
