Job description


The Freedom to Speak Up Guardian acts as an independent practitioner working alongside the Executive Team and other senior leaders/managers.

You will enable and promote an open and transparent culture that embraces patient safety where colleagues employed by and/or working at the Trust, are encouraged and feel confident to raise concerns and issues where ‘learning not blaming’ is the norm.

The Guardian helps to:-
• Protect patient safety and the quality of care
• Improve the experience of workers
• Promote learning and improvement.

By ensuring that:-
• Colleagues are supported in speaking up
• Barriers to speaking up are addressed
• A positive culture of speaking up is fostered
• Issues raised are used as opportunities for learning and improvement.

A highly credible leader, the Guardian has a compassionate and inclusive style and should be innovative, collaborative and pragmatic in their approach to embedding positive culture change.

• Partner with and advise the Board of Directors and Chief Executive to create an open
culture which is based on listening and learning and not blaming
• Develop and maintain the Trust’s Freedom to Speak Up Policy and associated guidance
and resources
• Develop in collaboration with the Board of Directors, Chief Executive and Executive Team
a range of mechanisms, in addition to formal processes, which empower and encourage
colleagues to speak up and do so safely
• Promote all colleagues to speak up including those with disabilities and from black and
other minority ethnic backgrounds
• Design, implement and monitor educational programmes accessible for all colleagues so
that they understand how they can raise concerns and for managers about how they
respond to concerns and support colleagues appropriately
• Lead and develop the FTSU Ambassador network ensuring a regular programme of
network/support meetings
