Job description

The teaching of English at Davenies is founded on certain principles, ideas and enthusiasms. A sense of wonder and exploration is at the centre of our philosophy. It is from this curiosity that our objectives and aims flow naturally, instilling in our pupils a love of language, the confidence of true expression, and skills that will serve them throughout their lives. When learning English our boys have an awareness that this, more than any other subject on their timetables, explores the human condition, and that language embodies the subtle worlds of emotion, intellect, feelings and morality.

Inclusivity is not so much an overt mission statement of the Department, but implicit in the manner in which boys learn, mirroring the aims and ethos of the school. Gone are the days when the content of lessons was conservative; through the Accelerated Reader scheme, teaching beyond the classroom walls, and exposure to writing poetry, reading plays, discovering non-native literature or debating contemporary issues boys are empowered to give of their best and succeed, grow and experiment.

The boys increasingly use technology to enhance their learning experience. In Year 4 the boys are given an iPad to use, which will be their own personal learning companion as they move up the school. In this way, they can use specific learning apps and software to enrich their understanding and communication skills.  The boys learn to share and collaborate through paired and group work, building positive relationships and developing self-confidence.

Additionally, all the boys have opportunities to join in the extra-curricular activities offered, to play in sporting fixtures against other schools and perform publicly in drama and music.

Objectives

Principal Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks

• Teaching English at KS2 and lower KS3 level, including Common Entrance and potentially Scholarship at 13+
• To prepare and teach lessons in line with the agreed syllabus and schemes of work
• To assess pupils’ learning as appropriate
• To liaise with the Head of Department and other teachers of the subject, and to take part in Departmental Meetings
• To ensure the departmental policy is met, schemes of work taught appropriately, records maintained and resources kept and updated
• To communicate effectively and regularly with parents and other staff
• To support visits and other special events with the Department
• To liaise with Pastoral Heads where necessary

Additional Duties

• You will be expected to take on supervisory duties during the normal school week
• To contribute to our activities programme
• Attendance at Parents’ Evenings for the classes taught
• Attendance at relevant Staff Meetings
• To be a Form Teacher

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who is patient, understanding, innovative, collaborative and who has the willingness to involve themselves within the English Department fully.

Qualifications and Knowledge

• The candidate should have attained QTS, and will be expected to hold a degree
• A thorough knowledge of the subject
