He would like to become more confident about engaging in different activities in the community; over the last year, since leaving residential college, he’s been going out less and has lost some of his confidence in dealing with the world. He can be quite anxious and is particularly sensitive to the sounds of small children when out and about. P has enjoyed many activities in the past, e.g. quad biking, horse riding, climbing, going to the gym, yoga. He is very athletic, and a fast walker so needs someone who enjoys being active and can keep up with him. You would also support P develop his independence skills in the home (e.g. cooking), and engage in games and activities to expand his social skills.

Hours and rate of pay:

Rate of pay is up to £14.72 per hour depending on experience. Hours would depend on the needs of P and his parents. Usually, it would be 3 or 4 hours a week, with occasional whole day sessions when P’s parents are away. It is essential that you are willing to do some evening and weekend work, by arrangement in advance. Enhanced DBS check would be required, and you will receive 5.6 weeks paid annual leave (pro-rata).

What you would be doing:

Supporting P to have regular outings that will enable him to increase confidence and skill in accessing the community without family members. Developing life skills, accessing local community, accessing public transport, shopping and budgeting tasks. Support him to access, and increase his confidence and skills in using, public transport. Supporting P with cooking. Extending his leisure options within the home by engaging in various games and activities, modelling appropriate language and behavior, and extending his skills and knowledge to support future opportunities for leisure eg in community groups.

Person specification:

You should have experience of supporting people with autism, language disorders and anxiety; P’s anxiety can lead to him struggling to communicate his frustration and feelings of being overwhelmed in situations. It is important that you have a good understanding, and experience of, autism to be able to de-escalate any situations that may arise. You should enjoy being active and have the skills to give P support with building confidence & self-esteem & promoting independence. You need to be a reliable and committed person; you are building up a relationship with a vulnerable adult and that demands a level of commitment, integrity, and responsibility. Reliability and flexibility are very important, as is good communication with P’s parents, should plans have to be changed for any reason. A full UK driving licence would be desirable but not essential.
