At Hinkley Point C (HPC), we are building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK. Marking a significant milestone in the revitalisation of our nuclear power industry, HPC will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions. The electricity generated by its two EPR reactors will offset 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year and will help Britain achieve Net Zero and protect the environment from the threat of climate change.
Opportunity…
We are recruiting for an Environmental Specialist who will provide a wide range of support across the Safety &Regulation (S&R) Environment Team. You will be within the Conventional Environmental Technical Team and provide a broad range of environmental engineering, environmental permitting, regulatory engagement, and environmental technical support and will provide broad opportunities to develop skills and specialisms. It will include the provision of advice and guidance to other departments within HPC to ensure that core environmental design assurance and compliance activities are delivered to a high standard of quality and timeliness. The role will also include support to construction, commissioning and operation teams as the project progresses and as required.HPC works in close collaboration with the engineering and project management teams of EDF in France and the UK. This role will be actively engaged in working with the broader EDF family.This opportunity provides a huge scope for professional development and might be suitable for early career environment professionals or someone changing career direction to environmental science.

What you’ll be doing…
As an Environmental Specialist your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Provision of support to the Conventional Environmental Technical Manager on a range of environmental technical topics and lead on topics and tasks as directed.
- Developing, maintaining, and promoting knowledge of the environmental processes for new nuclear builds, providing advice within the directorate and across HPC as required.
- Coordinating within the Environment team, the wider S&R directorate, the HPC project, and EDF Group to share required information.
- Contributing to review and critical assessment of relevant environmental legislation and policy to ensure that HPC interests are appropriately represented.
- Reviewing and critically assessing current & new design, and design changes ensuring that the highest standards of environmental protection are upheld.
- Provision of support in applying for consents, permits, and licenses, as required.Who you are…

- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in environmental science/engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience of working in a technical, environmental role.
- Knowledge and skills in environmental issues (legislation, policy, regulatory guidance, and standards).
- Excellent communication/interpersonal and influencing skills. General professional qualities including accuracy, tenacity, result-oriented and teamwork-
oriented attitude, diplomacy.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills. Your background may include some of the following:

- Membership (or progression toward membership) of a relevant professional institution (e.g., IEMA).
- Chartered Environmentalist (or equivalent) or working toward chartered status.
- Experience in the nuclear or other hazard industry.Closing date: 7th January 2024
