Say Aphasia

Location

Brighton & Hove, East Sussex | United Kingdom

Job description

We are looking for help to raise awareness of our cause, and raise money. Say Aphasia support people with the communication disability Aphasia.

What will you be doing?

Say Aphasia charity supports people with aphasia. We are looking for help to raise awareness of our cause, and raise money. This will be remote volunteering with online catchups with the service manager. We also encourage our volunteers to attend our support groups to meet our service users.

Aphasia is a communication condition caused by damage to a specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. Aphasia can be caused by stroke, a brain tumour, a severe head injury or a progressive neurological condition like dementia. Aphasia leaves a person unable to communicate effectively including difficulties with speech, reading or writing. It does not affect intellect. People with aphasia know what they want to say, they just may not be able to say it. About 350,000 people in the UK are living with Aphasia.

People with aphasia often feel isolated and lonely due to their communication challenges. It doesn't need to be this way. Through our groups, people can regain their independence and continue to live content lives.

We have 15 support groups in the UK, and seven groups are in Sussex.

What are we looking for?

Experience with creating and executing a campaign.

What difference will you make?

Aphasia unfortunately is not well heard of not understood.  We want to change that and make aphasia a well-known household word.
The founder of the charity, Colin, had his stroke in 2013, and was told he had aphasia as a result. There was a lot of confusion and lack of understanding for Colin and his family. His family searched for support and clarity about what aphasia was and how it would affect his everyday life. Unfortunately, information was sparse.

With your help, we want to provide more help and understanding to people with aphasia and their families. We need your expertise to reach more people and get in front of those friends and families who know someone with aphasia. We also need your help to create a successful fundraising strategy so we can sustainably continue running our services.

Your help will make a huge impact as it will:

* help to increase understanding of aphasia

* reach more people with aphasia

* reach more friends and family of those with aphasia

* reach the general public to increase awareness

As a result, your help will make a positive change to:

* reduce negative emotions such as confusion and frustration for people with aphasia and their families, due to a lack of understanding

* increase the quality of life for people living with aphasia

* increase public understanding of aphasia and specifically on how to have a successful conversation with someone with aphasia.

* allow people with aphasia to have successful conversations in their day-to-day lives with more people who understand, and to regain independence, knowing that their local dentist, shop assistant, or bus driver will understand how to help and make life easier for those with aphasia.

Before you apply

Please provide a cover letter detailing why you are interested in this role with Say Aphasia, and your relevant experience. Interviews will be an informal Zoom / Google Meet chat with the service manager, CEO and a trustee.
