Main Responsibility
Lead the Solution Engineering team within Telecoms Operations, embedding the strategic direction, solving complex issues and continually seeking creative opportunities for innovation for our customers and passengers.
What will you be doing?
- Lead and drive the Solution Engineering team to provide a consistently high standard solution engineering capability across Telecoms Operations.
- Lead, develop and manage colleagues and suppliers to provide business relevant advice and expertise to customers so that the highest quality solutions and proposals are created.
- Develop Telecom customer strategies, providing the necessary fact base to stakeholders so that decision making is robust and auditable in relation to the consumption of telecommunications services.
- Scope and create complex customer solutions with the engagement of stakeholders to fulfil the required business outcomes, whilst being cost effective, high quality and maintaining alignment with industry standards, Telecoms Operations business strategy, products and architectures.
- Develop complex business cases in support of Telecoms solutions that accurately reflect end to end costs to form the basis for fundamental decision making and delivery within budget.
- Develop and maintain technical relationships with 3 rd party product providers and approved suppliers, including managing interactions, in-depth knowledge and road maps, so that cutting-edge customer solutions can be delivered.
- Create and own, using deep technical knowledge and up-to-date industry information, high quality customer facing solution documentation and presentations so that complex concepts are widely and effectively communicated to our customers, business, passengers and railway.
- Influence stakeholders at all levels to gain buy-in to solutions and where necessary securing approval for funding so that proposals can be progressed to implementation.
- Be the point of escalation for the Solution Engineering team, managing to completion any high-risk and complex situations so that all solutions can be delivered in a satisfactory way for the customer.
- Undertake the role of CRE/CEM in accordance with company standard NR/L2/RSE/02009 to meet engineering management requirements.
The Ideal Candidate
- Relevant educational and/or professional qualifications or equivalent demonstrable experience (such as Masters in Computer Science, Chartered IT Professional, TOGAF, COBIT)
- Demonstrable experience in a senior technology consulting role in a large scale, diverse, customer centric organisation.
- Experience working at the earliest stages of solution development in situations with high levels of ambiguity bringing structure and clarity to enable the team to create compelling solutions and services.
- The ability to gain an understanding of the needs, demands and preferences of stakeholders through direct interaction and translate this into solutions aligned to a strategy.
- Confident in communicating complex and technical ideas to technical and senior business colleagues bringing clarity in an unambiguous way.
- Extensive demonstrable experience in defining, developing and documenting telecommunications strategy, architecture and solutions.
- A broad understanding of the Software Defined Networking market and the difference in vendor technologies with in-depth knowledge of at least two of the leading SD-WAN vendor solutions.
- Demonstrable ability to forge technical and professional relationships at senior levels internally and externally.
- Organisational skills to manage priorities and progress initiatives in a matrix stakeholder environment where direct line management responsibility is absent.
- Qualified in Telecommunications and IT delivery best practices (PMI, PRINCE2, ITIL)
- Knowledge of telecommunications technology and products including wholesale services, DWDM, Ethernet, MPLS VPNs and enterprise services; LAN, WLAN, Unified Communications, Security, Software Defined Networking and 3G/4G mobile technologies.
- Knowledge of telecoms within the rail or transport industry sector.
- Demonstrable knowledge of commercial engagement processes and best practice when working with 3 rd parties to procure infrastructure, products and services.
- Ability to think and act strategically to negotiate complex arrangements and positively influence outcomes within a corporate and/or utilities governance environment.
- Can balance and justify commercial implications equally as well as technological concepts.
