ROLE SUMMARY
We are currently looking for a Research Engineer to join our Research and Development department based in Dunfermline. You will be responsible for applying research to pioneer technology prototypes, assessing the performance of prototypes and handing over prototypes into commercialisation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver well-documented designs and prototype implementations of technology demonstrators, known as technology assets, for retinal imaging both to product development and to clinical trials.
- Deliver well-documented reports and associated files and documents on evaluation methods, experiment designs and experiment results to inform marketing decisions, enable new product development and facilitate verification of technology assets.
- Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of processes, standards and infrastructure for the development of technology assets.
- Interact with external technology development partners both from universities and business to ensure successful transfer of knowledge, prototypes, prototype designs and assessments of technology assets into the organisation.
- Interact with external clinical research partners to ensure the efficacy of technology assets is sufficient to warrant clinical use.
- Engage with stakeholders within the organisation to ensure technology assets meet their requirements in product, especially requirements that stipulate the efficacy of technology assets.
- Engage with stakeholders within the organisation and, where appropriate, external to the organisation, to support commercialisation of technology assets through product development.
- Keep abreast with the latest relevant research, industry standards, regulations and technology developments to maintain professional competency.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a PhD, or evidence of experience at least equivalent, in engineering, computer science, informatics, mathematics or physics.
- Must demonstrated the ability to effectively communicate research impact through written and oral communication as evidenced through examples of written reports, publications and presentations as well as by technical interview questions.
- Must demonstrate the application of analytical methods from computer science, informatics, mathematics and or physics deemed relevant to medical imaging evidenced through a combination of reports, publications and by personal references where necessary.
- Must demonstrate high proficiency in applicable tools, methods and computer languages for the development of systems or subsystems deemed relevant for medical imaging; evidenced through examples of results obtained from the application of tools and methods.
- Must demonstrate high proficiency in their technical speciality through evidence of both applications developed and theoretical understanding. Specifically for these specialities:
Essential:
- Optics and imaging systems: development of systems or subsystems deemed relevant for medical imaging; evidenced through examples of results obtained from the application of tools and methods; and examples of systems and subsystems developed. Broad knowledge required around optics, photonics, computer programming and electronic systems.
- Digital systems: development of digital systems and characterisation of the performance of these digital systems evidenced through interview questions and on-the-spot exercises. Broad knowledge required around electronic systems, digital hardware components for control and acquisition, computer programming and software engineering.
Desirable:
- Software systems: computer programming through an on-line timed test and software development of applications and/or embedded control. Broad knowledge required around programming languages, architecture and organisation, graphics and visualisation, parallel and distributed computing, operating systems, networking and communication, software engineering and software development fundamentals evidenced through interview questions and on-the-spot exercises.
- Algorithms: computer programming through an on-line timed test and development and application of algorithms in image and signal processing. Broad knowledge required around programming languages, algorithms and complexity, computational science, graphics and visualisation, and software development fundamentals evidenced through interview questions and on-the-spot exercises.
- Mechanical engineer: design (CAD), prototype and characterise the performance of mechanical and thermal prototype components and enclosures evidenced through interview questions and on-the-spot exercises. Broad knowledge required around optical elements, thermal characterisation, translation and alignment of elements.
