History at Guildford High School
History is taught within a dedicated, thriving department. At GCSE, the subject is a popular option choice, with four groups in each of Years 10 and 11. We follow the Edexcel IGCSE course, covering units on Germany 1918-1945, Superpower Relations 1945-1972, Russia 1905-1924 and China 1900-1989.
At A Level we follow the OCR course. In the Lower Sixth, students split their time between studying the Tudors, 1485-1558, and Italy, 1900-1943. In the Upper Sixth, students study Civil Rights in the USA, 1865-1992. Alongside this, they complete their coursework, for which students are given a choice of topics, including the Tudors and twentieth century Russian and Soviet history.
All these courses are supported by a wide range of resources. We also run a number of visits to places of related interest ranging from the Somme Battlefields to Berlin.
We encourage students to undertake independent learning, and we, as colleagues, delight in a range of teaching styles. The department is highly collaborative; we share ideas and support each other in our weekly departmental meetings.
Members of the department are fully involved in the extra-curricular life of the school; in addition to running enrichment sessions with a focus on History, members also contribute to clubs such as debating.
The department is well resourced, and all staff and pupils are provided with iPads.
This is not intended to be exhaustive and the post holder may perform other duties reasonably required by the Head. Applicants will need to already hold the right to work in the UK and, if short-listed, be able to attend an interview at the school. The School reserves the right to make an appointment at any stage during the recruitment process.
