Job Description for Research technologist:

The role is to provide technical support within the technical capability of Effluent, HALES and Environmental Chemistry in the provision of nuclear decommissioning and environmental clean-up services with an emphasis on nuclear abatement processes. The available role is predominantly radioactive lab-based working with other team members and is based at the Central Laboratory Facility.
Main Responsibilities
Main Responsibilities for Research technologist:
- Technical support in the fields of effluent and environmental chemistry.
- Produces relevant Safety Paperwork for lab-based projects.
- Support to experimental work programmes including sampling, sample preparation and physical and chemical analysis.
- Interpretation and presentation of results.
- Provides support to Technical Lead and peers to define technical programme requirements and develop new ideas to meet internal and external customer requirements.
- Work as part of a team to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.
- Builds strong relationships with internal and external customers and collaborators.
- Training and development of self, including development into safety roles such as task supervisor and POW.
- Support team to meet objectives.
- Ensure all relevant safety rules and procedures are followed and applied.
Ideal Candidate
Essential Criteria for Research technologist:
- Degree in chemistry or relevant scientific discipline.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to form effective working relationships at all levels.
- Flexibility in dealing with changing workloads.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment including the planning and completion of complex experiments, and interpretation of the associated result.
- Willingness and aptitude to provide support to Technical Leads in all aspects of technical project delivery.
- Demonstrable pro-active approach to identifying and implementing improvements in ways of working.
- Excellent track record in upholding high standards in quality and safety.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years' worth of UK residency).
Desirable Criteria for Research technologist:
- Familiarity with a range of analytical techniques e.g. SEM, ICP / OES-MS, alpha spectrometry, gamma spectrometry, LSC.
- Experience in radiochemistry, including the handling of radioactive substances.
- Experience in carrying out a variety of laboratory work, including both batch and column experiments.
- Knowledge of radioactive waste disposal.
- Familiarity with SL effluent treatment plants.
- Appreciation of the need to balance R&D objectives with customer requirements and commercial opportunities.
