Vacancy for Library Services Manager at STFC
12 November 2023
Oxfordshire or Warrington, UK
£40,543 to £45,049 per annum
Full-Time
About Us
We are transforming our library services and developing our services to support open science and the needs of scientists working in the STFC National Laboratories.
The STFC National Laboratories provide research facilities and capabilities that, because of their scale, are operated as a national research resource. These facilities support groundbreaking science in biology, chemistry, physics, materials and engineering.
To help shape, develop and deliver change we are looking for a Library Services Manager to join the team and have operational responsibility to develop and deliver a forward-looking library service.
As the Library Services Manager you will based within the Open Science Services Group. The Group is responsible for the development and operation of library services, open access and open data services.
The Open Science Services Group is part of the Scientific Computing Department.
About the role
You will be responsible for the operational delivery of library services essential for supporting research processes at the National Laboratories. As we transform our services, you will facilitate the creation and development of new services that will form an innovative and modern research library.
You will develop and coordinate the library services for RAL and DL, managing a portfolio of information resources and their delivery to support research, innovation and learning across the organisation. You will be responsible for providing high quality consistent library services, which are flexible and efficient establishing relationships with library stakeholders to ensure services are user focused. The team also provides services to Diamond Light Source based at the Harwell site. The post holder will have the opportunity to explore the extension of services to other Institutes at the National Science and Innovation Campuses at Harwell and SciTech Daresbury.
Current functions that form the library services that the post will be responsible for include: content acquisition, development and management, library systems (library management system, discovery services), interlibrary loan and document delivery services, reading rooms and enquiry services.
You will need to work collaboratively across teams and hierarchies. There is line management responsibility for a distributed team of staff (currently 3 direct reports at 2 sites) but you will be expected to work in a matrix approach leading on and contributing to activities with staff outside of your direct line management responsibility.
You will develop a range of contacts internally and externally to achieve the objectives of the library service. For example, within the Group, the postholder will work closely on read and publish agreements with the Open Access and Publishing Support Specialist who leads on activities related to open access publishing, and within the National Laboratories with researchers and other library stakeholders to understand and establish user needs, external relationships will include suppliers and colleagues in other Research Council libraries.
