The SPA Access Officer will be the access point for service users, other professionals and members of the
public taking and managing the referral process for referrals concerning the safeguarding of children.
They will be part of a high impact and high profile service managing initial contacts, where at times there
will be emotional demands in responding to customers, who may be distressed.
They will develop and maintain good working relationships with a broad range of internal and external
partners including the Police, Education, Health, Probation and the voluntary Sector to ensure the
safeguarding referrals are responded to effectively and in a timely manner. The SPA Access Officer will
provide secretarial and administrative support including preparing correspondence, collating papers for
key meetings and performing general office administration . This will include maintaining and updating
the teams database and client database so that colleagues have access to up-to-date records and to
ensure statutory requirements for the storage of client records and other sensitive data are in line with
Borough’s requirements. They will also complete induction visits with new staff and visitors or students
providing appropriate guidance and ensure that they have a good overview of general office procedures
to assist them in their work routines.
Skills and experience
Experience of building strong partnerships, maintaining relationships and co-producing solutions to challenges across a diverse set of stakeholders, including children, young people and their families. Advocating the voices of those we are working with.
Experience of keeping and maintaining records (in accordance with local policy) and producing accurate reports, presentations, written updates to a range of stakeholders (which may include families, children or young people).
Knowledge of statutory legislation (for example Children’s Act) and national policy drivers that will affect children’s services and your role.
An awareness and understanding of the Children’s Social Care Sector and social work practice and relevant legislation underpinning this in particular safeguarding.
Experience of providing front line advice and support to customers.
Good interpersonal skills and a clear efficient telephone manner.
A good communicator who can respond calmly under pressure.
Integrity and the ability to deal with confidential information/matters on a regular basis.
Ability to assimilate and retain a significant and constantly changing volume of information.
Ability to collate and summarise key information for social workers/ social work managers to attend key meetings.
