Job description

Chelmsford City Council are recruiting a Building Control Officer to work within our Building Control Services Team.

The ideal applicant will have an excellent knowledge of construction technology and the building process as well possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills, IT literacy skills and possess a full driving licence with access to a vehicle.

To be successful for the Building Control Officer vacancy, you must have a relevant qualification, such as a degree, in a subject such as Building Surveying or Building Control and a sound knowledge of the relevant provisions in The Building Act 1984, The Building Safety Act 2022, Building Regulations 2010 and associated Approved Documents. The post holder will have full or associate membership for a relevant professional body such as the RICS, CABE or CIOB. In addition, the successful applicant will be registered with the Building Safety Regulator as a Class 2 up to category F or in the process of undertaking a competency validation with one of the accepted accreditors, (i.e. BSCF, CABE BICAS or Total Training).

The Building Control Officer will work as part of a team responsible for assisting in the enforcement of the Building Regulations. Responsibilities include assessing plans for compliance with the Building Regulations and undertaking site visits to inspect building works under construction as well as keeping accurate records relating to all decisions made. The successful applicant will also provide advice to construction professionals, building owners and members of the public.

Further responsibilities include dealing with and keeping records of unauthorised building work in contravention of the Building Regulations and dealing with reversion of works due to the cancellation of Initial Notices.
