We are seeking two enthusiastic individuals at Principal Engineer or Associate grade to be a part of our Development Infrastructure Team located Birmingham or Cardiff focusing on energy and utilities masterplanning.
YOUR TEAM
- The Development Team is a well-established and high performing discipline within the Planning and Development business unit which includes over 800 colleagues focused on project delivery through the whole project life cycle, from initial land acquisition, planning support and design, through to scheme implementation

- We help our clients to promote, implement and manage sustainable development, from pre-feasibility through to planning consent; establish plans and provision for how an area, its accessibility and needs, will develop over time and guide sustainable future development; and develop multi-disciplinary design from concept through to detailed design and construction
- We work with public/private sector land promoters and house builders, developers, signature architects, Government, and local authorities .

Your new role, what's involved?
As a senior member of the team you will lead and produce designs and drawings for projects across all areas of energy and utilities infrastructure including but not limited to technical reports for masterplanning and in support of planning applications, construction drawings and specifications, and the procurement of supply chain delivery and operational partners.
- Day to day project management in the delivery of concept studies and strategies with hands on design, leading to planning applications or construction drawing issue
- Development of Energy and Utilities Statements to support outline and detailed planning applications, including constraints, diversions, asset protection, new supplies, new energy and utility network and plant design
- Develop the strategies and infrastructure to enable zero-carbon developments for our clients
- Lead consultations with the incumbent utility providers to ascertain strategy and network upgrades to facilitate new development
- Develop new offerings for low carbon technologies to achieve energy and sustainability targets associated with Building Regulations Part L and S, Future Homes Standards, Planning Policy and Heating and Cooling Network Areas
- Drive progressive and resilient approaches to delivering net zero carbon across the development portfolio in liaison and collaboration with other experts within WSP
- Working with our strategic business units across the Energy and Water Sectors who will provide detailed design, ensure the design drawings and specifications for detailed planning applications and construction drawings meet all project requirements
- Advise clients both qualitatively and quantitatively (including all commercial evaluations) on alternative utility procurement, asset ownership, delivery and commercial models and options including Energy Service Companies (ESCos), Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs), Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), New Appointments and Variations (NAVs) and multi-utility companies
- Help clients to achieve optimal outcomes in respect of capital and operational cost, net zero carbon and other relevant success factors such as recognising the role of energy and utilities in driving social equality and placemaking outcomes
- Taking financial responsibility for your projects and being responsible for ensuring your projects are delivered to budget, programme and technical standards
- Working on varied multi-disciplinary projects and client accounts, liaising with clients at a local and national level ensuring technical excellence is in everything we deliver
- Assisting in the preparation of fee proposals, and involvement in business development activities
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
- Preferably an Engineering degree in a mechanical, electrical or energy discipline and either be Chartered or approaching Chartered status with experience in energy and utilities design
- Strong post graduate experience in a utilities and/or energy engineering working environment
- The ability to produce masterplans, site appraisals, write reports to support planning applications, design calculations and construction drawings
- A solid engineering foundation and an understanding of energy and utilities design and principles (layout, etc.)
- Experience in using relevant software packages Civils 3D and/or district heating design software such as NetSim (or similar software packages) together with experience in applying relevant local design guidance and standards.
- Experience in design of energy and utilities plant and networks and a background in utilities related work inclusive of the relevant design codes and to be well versed in the preparation of drawings for Contract Documents and requisite technical agreements
- Experience within, or have been involved with the procurement and selection of independent utility asset owners, Energy Service Companies (ESCos), and multi-utility companies
- The ability to work effectively with colleagues including more senior and junior staff in producing designs, drawings and reports is essential.
