Job description

The School of Science and Engineering has an international reputation for excellent teaching and topical research, particularly in addressing global challenges in energy, the environment, health care, technology, forensic science and infrastructure.

The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science is a 10 year £10 Million project with the remit to disrupt positively the current forensic science ecosystem. As a key appointment in the £10m Leverhulme Research Centre we are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a PDRA in Risk and Decision Making within our team to work specifically with the leadership of the Scottish Police Authority Forensic Services who will be part of the supervisory team.

Work will include identifying points where decision are made about the inclusion of evidence types in investigative and evidential processes at individual and interdisciplinary levels. This will involve both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Outputs of the research are expected to include value calculators and risk analysis tools in decision making.

You will have a background in law, social science or criminology research with specific interests in bias and exploring the interface between science and law around effectiveness, communication and risk. You should have a proved track record and understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methodology and interdisciplinary research.

Your priorities will include:

• Interpret findings obtained from research projects and publish new insights, expanding, refining and testing hypotheses
• Disseminate results and methodologies through peer reviewed journal publications, preparations of project reports, policy position papers and presentation at conferences
• Develop research methodologies to undertake collaborative research, including determining appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods and contributing to the development of innovative and exciting research ideas
• Directly or indirectly supervise research students
• Interact with national and international stakeholders, including the judiciary, forensic science practitioners, academics, law enforcement and industrial innovators

Who we're looking for:

• Educated to PhD level in a relevant subject or industry/operational experience
• Previous postdoctoral research experience in law/social science
• Demonstrable knowledge of the development and implementation of decision making for complex communities of practice, for example through using approaches such troublesome knowledge and threshold concepts
• Familiarity with open and reproducible science
• Have substantial knowledge of and direct experience of multi modal research methodology
