Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
Salary: £35,000 pa
Contract: 1 year fixed term contract (with potential for extension)

OVERVIEW
The Children and Young People Mental Health Specialist is an exciting new role in the team, brought about through the Crossing Pathways Whole Health Project, combining health and domestic abuse interventions. The post-holder will have creative freedom to develop and shape the role, using their skills and experience to meet the needs of children and young people, with support and guidance from the Head of CYP Services and the wider team.
The post-holder will sit within a team of CYP Mentors and Counsellors and will be line managed by the Head of CYP Services, who has a background in managing DA and children’s mental health projects and is completing a qualification in Art Psychotherapy, with a CAMHS placement.

JOB PURPOSE
The Children and Young People Mental Health Specialist (CYP MH Specialist) will work with the team at Rising Sun to support survivors of domestic abuse where mental health (including anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation) is a key support need.
The CYP MH Specialist will have three main objectives in their role:
- Upskill and support the Rising Sun team – provide advice, information and training to team members enabling them to confidently support survivors presenting with mental health and wellbeing needs, and to advocate for survivors needing further support from other agencies.
- Provide support to parents, children and young people – available to provide over the phone or in person support to parents, input to safety planning and risk assessments, signpost to appropriate services where necessary and respond to mental health related safeguarding concerns with support of the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Increase understanding of DA in MH settings and increase access to MH support – develop strong relationships between Rising Sun and local Mental Health agencies, attend partnership meetings and promote awareness and understanding of the impact of DA on mental health.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Upskill and support the Rising Sun team
- Lead on mental health related matters within the organisation, feeding into organisational planning.
- Attend CYP referral meetings and feed into screening, assessment and allocation of CYP referrals
- Act internally as a consultant on mental health for the wider Rising Sun team providing advice, links with external services and crisis planning for survivors
- Develop and deliver training around mental health for the Rising Sun team
Provide support to parents, children and young people
- Work alongside Rising Sun team members to support children and young people, co-working where mental health needs are high or in crisis
- Empower parents, providing advice, advocacy and emotional support around supporting their child with their mental health needs
- Develop and deliver learning workshops for parents around mental health
- Signpost and help survivors to engage with other services, e.g. CAMHS, youth services, peer support etc. including making referrals
- Work with the network around the children and young people, including schools
- Act as a Deputy Safeguarding Lead alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead
- Attend clinical supervision
Increase understanding of DA in MH settings and increase access to MH support
- Link Rising Sun in with other professionals and develop Rising Sun’s relationships with external mental health agencies
- Represent Rising Sun at partnership and multi-disciplinary meetings, building our reputation amongst commissioners, NHS and statutory services.
- Deliver training for MH professionals around domestic abuse together with Rising Sun’s domestic abuse experts
General
- Compile quarterly reports, including case studies, with support from our Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager
- Maintain commitment to the aims and values of the Rising Sun
- Ensure confidentiality on all appropriate matters, and recognise that any breach of confidentiality will be treated seriously
- Adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act, and Rising Sun’s policies and procedures, in particular safeguarding
- Partake in continuing professional development and ensure continual awareness of developments in legislation and policy which are relevant to the role
- Undertake any other tasks that are appropriate to the post and that reflect the needs of the organisation

Qualifications
- Qualified Mental health professional registered with HCPC or equivalent
- Masters qualification in a relevant subject (Desirable)
Knowledge and Experience
- 3+ years’ experience working in children and young people’s mental health with understanding of pathways into support services and rights of children and young people
- Evidence of recent continued professional development related to mental health
- In depth understanding of trauma and experience of working with trauma related mental health difficulties
- Knowledge and awareness of domestic abuse and of the impact on children at different stages of their development.
- Experience of carrying out risk assessments and developing care plans around mental health safety
- Experience of working with parents to support children and young people
- Experience of effective partnership working to improve outcomes for children and young people
- Strong understanding of and experience following safeguarding procedures
- Experience of acting as a Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy (Desirable)
- Strong understanding of intersectionality and working with difference
Skills and attributes
- Ability to work supportively and effectively with team members and external partners, and build good working relationships.
- Ability to motivate yourself and work independently on you own initiative, making decisions around risk and support needed
- Training development and facilitation skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Competent using Microsoft office programmes, in particular MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Flexible, proactive, continually updating own skills and knowledge
- Passionate about the aims and principles of Rising Sun
