Job description
-Supported program by the local government in Sichuan
-Short term internship (1 semester) for teaching English in Chengdu or other cities in Sichuan or Hunan province
-Teach at public schools from kindergarten to university in Sichuan or Hunan province
-Monday to Friday work schedule with weekends off
-Free housing accommodation provided by the hosting school
We are now looking for enthusiastic, positive undergraduates, graduates, and qualified English teachers with warm and adventurous spirits to participate in our exciting and meaningful Internship & ESL Teacher Program. Our programs are located mainly in Chengdu and other cities in Sichuan & Hunan province. You will be assigned to one of our public schools (kindergarten to university) with free accommodation provided.
We are a provincial organization directly under the leadership and guidance of the Education Department of Sichuan Province with a primary mission to promote education exchange and cooperation among colleges, schools and other educational organizations in Sichuan and parts in other regions. We explore and develop appropriate projects and provide help and support for internationalization of education in the whole province.
We currently have two teaching programs running. One is the 4 to 4.5 months Internship Program, the other is the 1 year Professional Teachers’ Program. You will be placed at our public schools with regular Monday to Friday working hours, a monthly wage, free accommodation, regular weekends off, 24-hour support and sufficient time for travel.
We hope to enrich people’s lives through education and promote cultural exchanges between the East and West. Every soul is like an island, linked by the ocean, and through experiencing the Chinese culture in a place like Sichuan and exchanging thoughts with your Chinese students, you also inspire these local students from the other side of the world.
There will be an orientation upon arrival if you are placed in Hunan province.
The whole orientation lasts one week and includes:
1. Teaching methodologies, lesson planning, introduction to the differences between Chinese and foreign students, survival Chinese, tips on living in China and finally a quick introduction to traditional Chinese culture like Tai Chi, calligraphy and paper cutting.
2. One-day trip to the surrounding tourist attractions
3. Welcome dinner: you will experience some authentic Chinese cuisine
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province, which is known as the “Heavenly State” (Tian Fu Zhi Guo). Being the natural habitat of cute giant pandas, Chengdu is located in the west of Sichuan Basin and in the center of Chengdu Plain. It covers a total area of 12.3 thousand square kilometers with a population of over 11 million.
People from Chengdu (or Sichuan/Chongqing, in general) tend to eat spicy food. Local specialties include Grandma Chen’s Tofu, Chengdu Hot pot, and Dan Dan Mien (literally meaning, “Noodles carried on a pole” (Dan Dan Noodles). All three dishes are spicy. Mapo Doufu and Dan Dan Mien contain Sichuan peppers to give them additional flavor. Chengdu outnumbers Shanghai in the number of tea houses and bars despite having less than half the population. The inhabitants have a reputation in China for having a laid-back attitude and for knowing how to enjoy life.
-Maximum of 16 teaching hours per week
-Admin hours vary with each school (usually only a few hours)
-Monday to Friday work schedule
-Student age: kindergarten to university (based on the assigned school)
-Plan lessons and classroom activities
-Attend staff meeting and teacher training
-Teach students fluency in verbal, listening and reading
-Introduce students to western cultures and festivals
-Monthly salary / living allowance: 7,000 – 10,000 RMB per month for the 1 year ESL Teacher Program / 2,000 RMB per month for the 4-4.5 month Internship Program
-Airport pick-up and free accommodation nearby the school provided
-Flight allowance provided on contract completion: 8,000 RMB (ESL Teacher Program) / 4,500 RMB (Internship Program)
-All public holidays provided (full pay) plus 2 months summer & 1 month winter vacation for 1 year program ESL teachers (half pay)
-Legal ‘Z’ work visa (1 year contract) / Legal student X visa (4-4.5 months internship) provided with assistance
-Lunch and dinner provided during working schedule
-2 hours of Chinese lessons weekly (internship participants)
-Free online Mandarin Chinese learning course
-Authority-issued certificate of completion and recommendations letter
-Professional pre-job training with on-going program supervision
-Bachelor’s degree required for 1 year ESL Teacher Program (internship participants don’t have to be degree holders)
-TEFL certificate 120 hours plus required (No TEFL? – We recommend INTESOL )
-Native English speaker from UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland and non-native speakers with fluent English and a clear accent
-2 years of relevant teaching experience (preferred for internship & required for 1 year contract teachers)
-Internship position: 265 USD deposit directly to the school is required
-Clean criminal record check
-Fluency in oral and written English
-Professional, positive and culturally aware
-Energetic, friendly and hard-working
